Squadron Leader Gurbakhash Rai Sahni was commanding a Mobile Echelon Maintenance Unit in a forward area in the Western Sector during the December 1971 operations. He managed the tremendous operational works at his unit in a very efficient manner and sited a large number of observation posts which contributed significantly in taking tactical action in time.

For his leadership, zeal, skill and devotion to duty of a very high order he is awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal.
