Wing Commander Jammalamadaka Lakshmi Narasimha Sastry was commissioned in the Administrative Branch of the Air Force on Republic Day, 26th January, 1950. After serving on the staff of a Command Headquarters he underwent a specialist course in photo interpretation. Thereafter, he served for a number of years in a photographic reconnaissance squadron, and in a similar capacity at Air Headquarters. Since then, he has served in administrative appointments at Command and Air Headquarters. In all these appointments he has acquitted himself well.

Since May, 1967 Wing Commander Sastry has been serving at Air Headquarters in the Directorate of Personnel (Airmen) first as an Assistant Director and later as the Deputy Director.

Wing Commander Sastry, who is responsible for a broad spectrum of subjects such as recruitment, training and promotion, which directly affect the career and morale of airmen, has displayed great diligence and insight and achieved a high degree of effic iency in various aspects of the administration of airmen.

Wing Commander Sastry has also worked on the scheme to introduce Non-Combatants (Enrolled) and seen to its implementation. He has consistently displayed qualities of exceptional devotion to duty, cheerfulness and willingness work under conditions of stress, regardless of personal convenience.

Wing Commander Jammalamadaka Lakshmi Narasimha Sastry has rendered distinguished service of a high order. He is awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal.
