Details : | Squadron Leader Sirigere Shivashankarappa Chaithanya (24143) Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) was on the posted strength of a Signal Unit from 03 Nov 2003.Sqn Ldr Chaitanya was an outstanding mountaineer who had been pursuing his passion of mountaineering since 2001 after completing Basic Mountaineering Course and Advance Mountaineering Course from HMI Darjeeling. He has been member of expeditions to Mt Deo Tibba, Manali Peak, Mt Kabru Dome and Mt Kamet in Garhwal Himalayas and surnmittcd all of them.Sqn Ldr Chaitanya was selected as a climbing member for Mt Everest expedition. This physically fit and motivated officer took it as a challenge and was very jubilant about the selection, lie was detailed for summit attempt In the second team and reached the summit on 30 May 2005. He lias brought pride to the Nation as well as IAF by putting the National Flag on the top of the world. Unfortunately, while returning from the summit he faced snow blizzard and extreme conditions. Undeterred, he fought to save the life of his climbing sherpa while himself trying to reach back to camp. He constantly encouraged his Sherpa to get back to camp despite his exhausted condition. Sqn Ldr Chaitanya did not make it back to camp. It is presumed that he fell to his death from the north-east ridge.For displaying exceptional courage and bringing laurels to the Indian Air Force, the Hon'ble President is pleased to award "Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry)' to Squadron Leader Sirigere Shivashankarappa Chaithanya (Posthumously). |
