Details : Group Captain Vishal Malhotra (23518) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in fighter stream in Jun 1995 and is the Commanding Officer of a Su-30MKI Squadron since January 2014. Gp Capt Malhotra is a very experienced Qualified Flying Instructor who is qualified on a number of different aircraft types. He was one of the pioneers of Hawk training in the IAF, having been selected to be amongst the first batch of instructors to undergo the Hawk conversion in the UK. In that capacity, he contributed immensely in setting up the foundations of the training system, which has evolved into its present form. He has undergone the Staff Course in Australia in 2011 and by his sheer hard work and performance, demonstrated the high calilber of an IAF officer amongst international peers. Gp Capt Malhotra took over command of his Sqn in very unsettled conditions. Due to non-availability of the runway at its home base, the Sqn spent almost one and a half years, in continuous outstation detachments. The challenges of maintaining serviceability, operational efficiency, morale and administration are far more complex when at different outstation bases. He dealt with the aspirations of all aircrew, officers and other personnel very empathetically. He managed these many complex stresses extremely well and displayed a high quality of leadership, creating a very cohesive flying unit. This was evident in the very high state of operational capability of the Sqn. He has led all activities by personal example and all the sqn pilots were qualified to the highest possible level, commensurate with their experience. The Sqn always met its operational commitments in all exercises and on a routine basis. He ensured that the quality of flying was of a very high caliber and all the crew were capable of participating competently in very complex scenarios. The Sqn also maintained a very high level of serviceability, consistently. This was possible with judicious planning, careful stagger and focused attention to even the most routine un-serviceabilities. Due to his constant involvement and demand for excellence in all activities, the Sqn was adjudged the Best Fighter Sqn in the Command. For his professional competence, high quality of leadership and exceptional devotion to duty, Hon'ble President is pleased to award Vayu Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty) to Group Captain Vishal Malhotra.
