The cross is awarded to an officer or a Warrant Officer for an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying, but not while in active operations against an enemy.
Only two awards of the AFC were made to the Indian Air Force. One of the awardees, Flt Lt Eduljee died in operations on the Burma front. A third award was made to an Indian Pilot in the RAF.
