Gp.Capt. Bipinchandra Shantaram Raje, was born in Bombay on the 17th October 1935. He attended the King George high school and thereafter the Ruparel College. During his College days he joined the NCC air wing and earned his private pilot’s license from the Bombay Flying Club, before joining the Indian Air Force.

He was commissioned on the 25th August 1956 in the 69th Pilot’s Course. During his initial days he flew the Vampires and the Toofanis and later converted to the Mystere IVa. He saw action during the Goa Liberation in 1961.

In the 1965 Indo-Pak war he was part of No.1 Squadron "Tigers" based at Adampur.  He later went on to convert to the Su-7 and joined the 222 Sqn.
