The genesis of 9 BRD can be traced back to 1 May 1957 when a small unit christened as Base Signal Repair Unit (BSRU) was formed. The Depot was renamed as 9 Base Repair on 1 April 1966 Depot and has been traditionally repairing, overhauling Ground Electronic equipment and Navigational aids. It has evolved over the period of years by adapting to new Air Force requirements to arrive at current shape and size. The Depot now deals with Avionics Systems of SU-30MKI, Mirage- 2000, AN-32, Avro, MI-17 and PC-7 etc. The Depot is also tasked with the serial production of UMC of SU-30 MKI. This apart, the Depot is taking lead in indigenization of Avionics, pioneering the concept of Modular Open System Architecture. The Depot is also centre of excellence in Machine Learning and has initiated many an innovative project based on ML.Also identified maintenance of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) equipment.
