47 Wing

Date Raised : 1990-03-12 Location : Thanjavur
The airbase was first constructed in 1940 by the Royal Air Force. During the period 1942-45, 36 Sqn, 353 Sqn and 60 Sqn of RAF operated from this airfield with Hudson, Wellington 1C, Hurricane and Thunderbolt aircraft. After independence, the airfield was handed over to the Airports Authority of India and Vayudoot operations were undertaken from this base. With the formation of Southern Air Command in 1984, a permission for 47 Wing at Thannjavur was also provided. The IAF took over the airfield in March 1990. After the IAF took over the airbase, land acquisition started in 2006 for converting it into an Air Force Station. The Base is expected to house a full complement of Su-30s soon
