The No.1 Op Group (also referred to as Opl and Operational) nomenclature was used between 1947 to 1980 on four occasions for three different commands. At the time of independence, there was the No 1 Operational Group which controlled all the flying Unitss including the flying training Unitss. On 22nd July 1949 the No 1 Operational Group was redesignated as the Operational Command which later on became Western Air Command (WAC). The reorganisation of IAF led to the formation of No 1 Operational Group again at Calcutta on 27 May 1958. This group was responsible for the operations of the IAF in the eastern as well as the central sector of the country. Training Command was formed on 22 Jul 1949 with an aim to impart training through training institutes. Training Command traces out its lineage from the No.2 Training Group which was set up immediately after Independence. Training Group was redesignated as Training Command in 1949. The need for such an organisation was realised immediately after the J&K 1947-48 operation in which the IAF was called upon to assist formations of Indian Army involved in the operations. Earlier this task was performed by suitable Unitss of RAF in India. The first joint Army/Air coordination cell of post independent India, called No. 1 Air Task Force, was thus formed to work in conjunction with No. 11 Corps of the Indian Army. The results obtained through such organised co- operation were so successful that it was decided to form similar joint co-ordination cells. On 7 July 1971, this establishment was upgraded to Adv HQ, CAC and given control of 8 TAC. In May 1991, the establishment was again downgraded to an AFLC. The incumbent staff at Adv HQ, CAC moved to Pune to take over as Adv HQ, SWAC. Between Dec 2003 and April 2009, AFLC was vacant with the role being performed by AFS Memaura. During its infancy, the ADA had five sector operation centres employing one type 21, one type 15 and three ANTPSIE radars. Subsequent to the Chinese debacle, the air defence of the country was given a big boost with the help of US aid in the form of Star Sapphire radars. Consequently No 1 ADA was redesignated on 15 Oct 66 as No 1 Air Defence Control Centre. The Units was made responsible for the air defence of the entire area of responsibility of WAC.
