The 1st Pilots Course is generally attributed to be the batch of Indians called for service into the IAF Volunteer Reserve in November 1939. A number of qualified young men who were already holders of Private Pilot's License were invited to join the IAFVR. They reported for duty at Flying Training School Risalpur. All the trainees who reported for training were commissioned the day they turned up - thus different officers had different dates of commission. Well known members of this batch include Air Chief Marshal P C Lal, Air Marshal R Rajaram , Air Commodore R Sitaram and others.
