| Details : |  Group Captain Devarajan Balamurali (18520) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as an engineer in the Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) branch on 29 Aug 86. He is on deputation to Regional Center for Military Airworthiness (RCMA) (Engines), Koraput, CEMILAC, DRDO since 07 Apr 11 and is holding appointment of Joint Director in charge of design development, defect investigations, manufacturing and overhaul issues of AL 31 FP aeroengine of Su-30 MKl aircraft. He has a wide and varied experience on fighter, helicopter and transport aircraft systems ranging from first to fourth line servicing and is also a Cat '1 qualified Flight Engineer on IL-76 MD aircraft with instructor qualification. In his current role within a year, he has addressed several design and reliability issues plaguing Su-30 MKl aircraft effectively with manufacturer through in-depth studies. This has also given him a vast exposure on continued air-worthiness of aero-engine and certification. As Squadron Commander of Aircraft Tech Squadron of three MiG-23 BN squadrons at a forward air base, he ensured highest serviceability in Western Air Command during 'Op Parakram' and also in subsequent years. During his 26 years of service, he was commended twice by CAS and once by AOC-in-C, HQ TC for his laudable all-round performance, pro-active roles and innovative ideas. At 11 BRD, he has carried out a large number of structural modifications and aircraft recovery through innovative and RCMA approved repair schemes on MiG-23 aircraft. Now, at RCMA Koraput, he has conducted extensive aeroengine recovery studies and is deeply involved in lifing studies in liaison with various DRDO agencies. Noteworthy, among these achievements are recovery of a MiG-23 UB MS 315 declared Cat 'E' by RCMA (Nasik) through a newly developed metal-composite patch repair scheme with NAL, Bangalore and recovery of Low Pressure Spools declared Cat 'E' by Mls UMPO, Russia of two AL31 FP aero-engines with DMRL, Hyderabad. Both these efforts paved way for new in-house technology development in military aviation sector and has led to huge foreign exchange savings of Rs 17 crores. He has also ably contributed at HQ Training Command in addressing problem areas in HPT-32 aircraft and the initial technical design deficiencies of Hawk Mk 132 aircraft with HAL and British Aerospace. He is trained abroad in United States Air Force on all NDI techniques in 2006-07 and has also presented Hawk Mk 132 related environmental design issues during Hawk User Group conference at Muscat, Oman in 2009. His vast experience, exposure has inculcated a creative approach in him for finding time bound solutions, instituting remedial measures and foresight in identifying intricate problems. This enabled him to achieve 100 % serviceability of MiG-23 UB aircraft during his tenure at 11 BRD, sustain high serviceability of Hawk Mk 132 aircraft at Bidar and also effectively address critical maintenance issues of HPT-32 aircraft. | Details : |  Group Captain Jeetendra Mishra (18575) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in the flying branch on 06 Dec 86. He is a Fighter Combat Leader, a Test Pilot and an alumnus of Air Command and Staff College, Air University, United States of America. He has held the appointments of Senior Test Flying Instructor at the Air Force Test Pilots' School, Commanding Officer of a MiG 21 squadron, Chief Test Pilot of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Director (Projects) for Aircraft Upgrades, Chief Operatioris Officer of a Su 30 MKI operating airbase and is presently the Director, Operational Planning and Assessment Group at Air Headquarters. As the Commanding Officer, his insightful planning and leadership ensured an extremely high serviceability of the MiG 21 aircraft resulting in a very high operational readiness of the unit despite the fleets' vintage. As the Chief Test Pilot his dedicated efforts and professionalism resulted in extremely high standards of newly produced Su 30 MKI aircraft and timely completion of the production targets despite numerous roadblocks and obstructions. As Director (Projects) his personal involvement, planning and commitment resulted in timely fructification of many prestigious projects, including the Su 30 MKI Block IV and BrahMos integration projects to name a few. As the Chief Operations Officer his untiring efforts resulted in a marked improvement in the operational environment of the base in addition to increment in safety and quantum of flying. In Jun 10 the officer was also selected to lead the Indian Air Force contingent for multinational air exercise Garuda IV in France. It was entirely due to his meticulous planning, foresight and leadership that the exercise was conducted smoothly, without any shortcomings whatsoever. This exceptionally conducted multinational exercise not only raised the bar in the defence cooperation among the participating nations but also left an indelible imprint of Indian Air Force's professionalism on the other two air forces. In his present appointment the officer has displayed exceptional operational acumen both in single and interservice scenarios. His professionalism, sense of purpose and dedication has resulted in revision of many operational philosophies and strategies, streamlining of operational procedures and updation of operational directives of the Air Force. His relentless and focused efforts, single minded dedication and result oriented approach to his responsibilities have resulted in successful conduct of many national and international exercises, finalisation of some critical and sensitive inter-services operational plans and successful resolution of many inter-services issues in the two years of his current tenure. | Details : |  Group Captain Brij Mohan Tyagi (18795) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in the flying branch on 13 Jun 87. He has since acquired around 3000 hrs of flying experience. Awarded with a commendation by AOC-in-C EAC in 1998, the officer has commanded prestigious units such as Aircraft Combat Simulator Unit and MiG Operational flying Training Unit 'B' before serving as Director Projects at Air HQ (VB) during 2009-10. Gp Capt BrijMohan Tyagi took over as Station Commander of one of the flying bases in the Central India on 31 May 10. The officer has displayed exemplary leadership qualities in achieving the operational objectives of the station, worked through an efficient maintenance strategy and effective administrative control. The fact that the station was adjudged the 'most improved station' of Central Air Command (CAC) during 2011-12 stands testimony to officer's vision, initiative and professionalism. The MiG-21 squadron, a lodger unit of the station was adjudged the best fighter squadron and the Air Force School at the station was adjudged as the best pre-primary school during 2011-12 are reflective of the officer's extraordinary penchant for overall development of the station and high morale of its personnel. Performing the role of a full-fledged station though established as a Care & Maintenance Unit in terms of its resources, the officer organised Centre for Air Power Studies seminar in 2011 and Chief Engineering Officer/Chief Technical Officer / Senior Logistics Officer conference of CAC in Feb 2012 in a manner which invited a high degree of appreciation and accolades from the higher formations and the participants. His personal involvement in modernization of station logistics section, issues of land management, development of infrastructure, monitoring of health and sanitation besides an optimum emphasis on welfare activities have yielded tangible results immensely contributing to overall growth of the station. | Details : |  Group Captain Puneet Surindernath Sarin (19073) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as an engineer in Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) branch on 07 Sep 87. During his 25 years in service, he has been posted to various fighter bases, Operational Command Headquarters, Base Repair Depots and has served as Team Leader of Indian Air force Training Team Botswana. He is on the posted strength of 11 BRD, AF since29 Mar 10 and has been functioning as Chief of Aircraft. Early in his career, the officer's efforts in streamlining second line activities helped reduce ac down time by as much as 30 %. He was part of the Team trained abroad to set up overhaul facilities for MiG-29 ac at 11 BRD in 1996. During this tenure he was involved in tasks like technology generation for TBO extension of MiG-29 ac and repairs on wing rib cracks, for which he was commended by the Chief of Air Staff in Oct 97. As Senior Engineer General Engineering Division at 11 BRD he was instrumental in indigenous manufacture of vitally required spares for overhaul of MiG-23 and MiG-29 ac. In 2002 he was deputed as Team Leader of IAF Training Team at Botswana, the efforts made in initiating maintenance ERP and implementation of QAS were appreciated by the Indian High Commissioner. His service papers on Analysis of failures of RD-33 Aero-engines in the MiG-29 Fleet and on Life extension and upgradation issues of MiG-29 ac have helped highlight issues for improvement of the fleet. The setting up of MiG-29 series upgrade line at the depot has been delayed by more than two years. To overcome these constraints the Production Division has carried out numerous life extension studies, indigenisation of spares, refurbishment of aggregates etc. The entire 1986 batch of MiG-29 ac comprising 30 ac would have been grounded but for timely completion of life extension on Ejection Seats and Landing Gears. These studies along with indigenisation of ejection seat spares have resulted in savings of foreign exchange in excess of rupees 200 crores. The focused approach to sustain production of ac and aggregates has helped both operating bases to maintain highest levels of serviceability in the IAF, even reaching 100% on more than two occasions in the past two years. As Chief of Aircraft, detailed planning has been undertaken to prepare human resource, technology and infrastructure for setting up MiG-29 Upgrade series line at the Depot. | Details : |  Group Captain Shovit Jain (19078) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as an engineer in the Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) branch on 05 Sep 87. He is posted to Air Headquarters as Director Air Staff Requirement (Simulators). Gp Capt Shovit Jain is a Category 'Pi Flight Engineer and a Right Test Engineer with over 3500 hours of flying on helicopters. He has been an Air Force Examiner for Flight Engineers in the Aircrew Examining Board. He has held numerous important field and staff appointments. He has contributed immensely as a Flight Test Engineer in enhancing operational capability of the helicopter fleet of Indian Air Force by his contribution in many important projects including single engine trials on the Mi-17 and Mi-17 IV, performance validation of the Mi-17 IV and weight reduction on Mi-26 while posted to Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment. While on deputation to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Group Captain Jain was the Flight Test Engineer for the Cheetal helicopter project and he was part of the flight crew that set the world record for landing at the highest altitude. As the Chief Engineering Officer of Air Force Station, Jammu his efforts and leadership ensured consistent achievement of 100% serviceability of the helicopters. He was posted to the Directorate of Air Staff Requirement in August 2008 and since then he has been involved in a number of major capital procurement cases of the Indian Air Force. His significant achievements include the case for procurement of the urgently required Basic Trainer Aircraft. The case was progressed in an extremely methodical, professional and efficient manner resulting in the successful culmination of the first contract based on Life Cycle Costing model. He was also responsible for finalising the case for procurement of C-17 aircraft following the Foreign Military Sale procedures. The officer with his ingenuity and foresight offered solutions for complex issues which were easily accepted by both officials of Ministry of Defence and officials of the Government of United States of America enabling expeditious completion of the contract. His balanced views, sound professional knowledge and capability to present the case in a logical manner contributed immensely to capability building of the Indian Air Force. The officer is recognised as an authority on Defence Procurement Procedures, Defence Offset Policy and Foreign Military Sale Procedures and is often asked for advice even from Ministry of Defence. His sound knowledge and professionalism has positively impacted modernisation drive of Indian Air Force and has showcased the professionalism of the Indian Air Force at various forums in Ministry of Defence and with other sister services. | Details : |  Group Captain Rajiv Mittal (19109) was commissioned in Indian Air Force as an engineer in the Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) branch on 14 Sep 87. He is presently commanding Groundcrew Examining Board (GEB), Chandigarh. He has held various key appointments, which include Senior Engineer (Electronics) at two flying bases, Chief Engineering Officer at a Training Establishment, Commanding Officer of a Tropo Unit and Base Commander of the Main Command and Control Hub Centre of DRDO. During his tenure as CO of a Tropo unit, he carried out modifications on the exhaust system of 1 KW Power Amplifier Module, which eliminated frequent link loss. While on deputation to DRDO in 2009, he successfully established a multi-layered Secure Communication Network (SCN) spread over 150 locations, encompassing Army, Navy, Air Force and DRDO. This network enables foolproof and security communication for Defence Strategic requirements. On assuming the command of GEB, AF, the unit responsible for conducting Airmen Promotion Examination (AIRPEXl, Gp Capt Rajiv Mittal was entrusted with the responsibility of replacing the conventional method of conducting the written part of AIRPEX to Online Testing and Evaluation System (OTES). The officer collected and collated data on the facilities available at different IAF bases, worked out the detailed system requirement, network architecture and prepared a comprehensive Project Plan. To make this vision a reality, the officer conducted presentations at all Commands HQ. Owing to his sheer commitment, in-depth planning and unwavering focus, the first phase of OTES is expected to functional by the end of this year. The completion of the project will pave way to tremendous saving in man-hours, reduction of movement of personnel, enhanced availability of manpower for operational commitments and quick declaration of results. With an aim to minimise the rate of failure in AIRPEX, Gp Capt Rajiv Mittal researched deep into the various reasons of failure of airmen in promotion examinations and attached each cause at its root by taking up the specific cases with various Bases, Commands, Weapon Cells, Directorates and Training Centres, He wrote individually to each air warrior appearing in his last chance of AIRPEX. His proactive approach and involvement has started reaping rich dividends with the failure rate already showing a downward trend. He has introduced novel concepts like the Instructional Ability Test, which identifies deserving air warriors capable of instructional duties by screening the air warriors who perform exceptionally well in AIRPEX. This will prove to be a valuable input for Air Force Record Office in posting instructors to Training Institutes. | Details : |  Group Captain Achuthan Jayanthan (19497) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in the Logistics branch on 17 Dec 88. The officer is posted as Command Logistics Management Officer (CLMO) at Eastern Air Command wef 02 May 11. In his 23 years of distinguished service, he has held important field and staff appointments that include Lgs Officer of Fighter and Transport bases, Deputy Chief Logistics Officer of two Equipment Depots, Senior Logistics Officer of prestigious Aircraft System Testing Establishment (ASTE) and a front line Fighter base. He has also performed staff appointments at Air HQ and Western Air Command. He graduated from Defence Services Staff College, Wellington in the year 2005. During the devastating earthquake at Bhuj in 2001, he coordinated relief work from the nodal cell at Air HQ. He was commended by the Chief of Air Staff in the year 2002. He also planned and carried out work services for construction of aero engines and drop tanks hangar in the desert terrain. He designed construction of a new Logistics Section which was housed in a temporary building. He was again commended by the Chief of Air Staff in the year 2008 and by the Vice chief of Air Staff in the year 2010. At Eastern Air Command, the officer, with his professional knowledge, foresight, meticulous planning, involvement and never say die attitude has many firsts to his credit. He, with critical Aircraft on Ground (AOG) analysis and excellent liaison with HAL and supply agencies, was able to achieve nil AOGs in Chetek/ Cheetah fleet. The officer, through his hard work and positive attitude, was instrumental in clearing all the critical AOGs of Su-30 fleet and achieving 79% of serviceability. As Captain, he has brought up the Vajra Sports Complex at HQ EAC to truly one of the best. He has demonstrated exceptional organising capability and managed various sports events like Field Commanders' Cup, Air Force Cup and CAS Cup single headedly. During the visit of CAS to EAC, the officer shouldered both, the responsibilities of PMC, Officers' mess and Captain Vajra Sports Complex in an exemplary manner. | Details : |  Group Captain Vikram Rajasekhar (19714) was commissioned in Indian Air Force as an engineer in the Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) branch on 12 Sep 88. He has held the appointments of Senior Technical Officer of Mi-26 helicopter unit, CO, Mi-26 Tettra School, CO, 41 Repair and Salvage Unit (R&SU), Command Engineering B at HQ EAC, Directing Staff at Air Force Technical College and Chief Engineering Officer(CEO) of Air Force Station, Hindan. As CO, 41 R&SU, in Dec 2009 he has conceived and formulated a temporary structural repair scheme for recovery of a crash landed Mi-17 1V heptr 2-3352 at Chungtash helipad that helped in retrieval of the heptr by a joint team of R&SU and Mi-17 trained personnel. The recovery of the heptr was significant due to extensive damage to main frames as nose landing gear had pierced into cockpit and distortion of tail boom skin. The officer took keen initiative in studying various Battle Damage Repair schemes of HAL and cut open various structural elements on a Cat 'E' Mi-8 heptr at No. 3 BRD and formulated a viable and safe structural repair scheme. During his tenure in R & SU, he has also conceived a repair scheme for recovery of lL-76 ac that sustained extensive damage to all leading edges of aerodynamic surfaces and nose radome in May 2010 as the ac entered into bad weather while returning from Leh. The officer has done his M Tech at IIT Mumbai and Air Staff Course at DSSC, Wellington. As CEO, Air Force Station, Hindan the officer displayed exceptional professional acumen, resource management skills, positive approach and quick in arriving at solutions in extremely challenging situations. His adept handling of C- 130J Induction and numerous maintenance and training issues that came up has ensured smooth induction and operation of the fleet without major glitches. The numerous maintenance issues that were overlooked in the Letter of Acceptance and Infrastructure of the project raised by the officer has been a source of lessons learnt and were quickly addressed during the definitisation stage of the C-17 Project planned ai Hindan. His involvement in both the Projects, attention to details, forecasting and timely projection of issues is of exceptional order. His involvement and commitment in a number of highly significant events & issues such as conduct of two Air Force Day Parades, recovery of Mi-35 belly landed heptr, recovery of Chetak heptr that landed in field due to engine failure, refurbishment of WIP Mi-17 heptrs that was pending for three years, expansion plan of AFNIT Communication network, offloading of armament trains, commissioning and acceptance of SREATC R-33 radar, erection of WCDMA equipment, Centre of Excellence Workshop, conduct of various training workshops assigned by Air HQ I HQ WAC, Exercise Gauntlet etc. is extremely praiseworthy. | Details : |  Group Captain Saneel Ohri (19731) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as engineer in Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) branch on 12 Sep 88. During his service career, Gp Capt Ohri has held various key appointments such as Senior Engineering Officer of two Russian aircraft squadrons, Senior Engineer (Aircraft) of the premier Transport fleet base of Air Force Station Agra, Senior Production Engineer at the An- 32 aircraft Base Repair Depot as well as Director Engineering Russian Transport Fleet at Air HQ. With his unique distinction of having been OEM trained on An-32 ac at Ukraine and IL-78 ac Refuelling Pod at Israel, Gp Capt Ohri has been particularly instrumental in setting up their overhaul lines at 1 BRD and 4 Wing, respectively. He is also trained on both IL-76 and IL-78 aircraft. For his dedication and devotion to duty, the officer was commended by Chief of the Air Staff in 2008 and by Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief WAC in 2005. As Chief Engineering Officer (CEO), AF Station Yelahanka, Gp Capt Ohri has been pivotally involved in enhancing the maintenance culture and ethos of this crucial Transport Pilot training base of IAF. Backed with the exclusive combination of in-depth training and diverse experience, at all levels, together with deft hands-on approach, the officer has conspicuously led his maintenance teams to deliver much higher aircraft serviceability figures than the respective IAF average. This endeavour of the officer, notwithstanding severe techno logistical limitations in these ageing fleets, has further helped the base in attaining remarkable highest-flying efforts in the IAF, well within the demanding schedule of the various pilot courses. During his tenure, Air Force Station Yelahanka has accomplished key milestones like setting-up of Inspection-level facility for upgraded Avionics of Dornier aircraft, which is not even available with HAL, fabricating stand for Main Rotor Hub and engine trolley of Mi-8 helicopter, utilising life-expired aircraft batteries for MT vehicles and setting up of qualitative testing labs for Engine Oil of Dornier aircraft, all of which have positively impacted equipment performance and maintenance costs. | Details : |  Wing Commander Chandrashekar Sreenivas (20196) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as an air traffic controller in administrative branch on 16 Jun 90. He is on the posted strength of Air HQ (VB) since 05 Jan 09 and working as Joint Director Operations (Air Traffic Services). He is a high calibre professional who displays exceptional confidence in any job, however difficult or challenging it may be. His dynamism, drive, initiative and enthusiasm in conduct of field and staff duties have been commendable. In his appointment as Senior Air Traffic Control Officer (SATCO) of a strategic base, runway maintenance was a challenging task due to its vintage. With operational orientation and close interaction with Military Engineering Services, he exploited laid down policies to use innovative maintenance practices ensuring runway availability for uninterrupted day/ night regular IAF operations as well as prestigious international and national exercises like 'Indradhanush', 'Akraman' etc. The officer conceptualised and designed an instrument approach procedure simulator along with a software expert, and has been a driving force in procurement of 41 abridged radar simulators, thus fulfilling a long pending requirement of additional training aids for Air Traffic Control Officers. This has resulted in overall improvement in standards of controlling and also saved few lakhs of rupees to the exchequer for software development. In 2007, Indian Air Force embarked on an ambitious turnkey project of Modernisation of Airfield Infrastructure (MAFI) at 30 bases to upgrade its op capability to include 24x7 all weather operations. The officer was appointed as the secretary of Project Management Group in the Rs. 1200 crore phase-I of the project. During contract negotiations, he was responsible for inclusion of certain equipment not in the scope of project such as inset approach lights in the over run area. | Details : |  Group Captain Pradip Kumar Routa (20565) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as an engineer in the Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) branch on 05 Mar 89. He has held various appointments like Senior Engineer in three helicopter units and UN Mission in Congo, Production Engineer at a helicopter overhaul depot and Joint Director of Inspection at Air HQ. The officer developed Russian testers of Mi-8 helicopter to enhance quality of servicing. He was cash awarded by The President of India. Russian helicopters had emergency landings for spurious fire warnings in the cockpit. He designed antispurious circuit, which was subsequently modified into all Mi-17 helicopters of IAF. Non availability of long endurance oxygen system in helicopters restricted flying mission in Siachen sector. He designed and developed an integrated high/low pressure oxygen system which was subsequently developed by Russians. Infrastructure for the only self sustained first Indian contingent at UN Mission Congo was set up by the officer in inhospitable weather conditions. Gp Capt Pradip Kumar Routa is a graduate from Air Force Technical College, Bangalore and post graduate in engineering from TIT, Patiala. The officer is trained on all Mi series helicopters in India and engine overhaul at MotoSich (Ukraine). He was commended by the Chief of Air Staff in 1993. Reliability of MT vehicles was a point of concern at the largest transit base, Guwahati. Segregation of vehicles based on type specific, independent team to take care, centralised preventive maintenance planning and roadworthiness certification was implemented by the officer. This improved the reliability. Poor quality of compressed gas has resulted in an aircraft incident. The officer created a test lab of its kind to ensure high quality. Induction of Dornier aircraft to station resulted large dependency on HAL. The officer created maintenance set up/ test labs and achieved very high serviceability. With personal involvement and expertise, he ensured nil servicing errors and managed incidents/accidents free flying. The contribution of the officer in providing helicopters for earth quake relief operation at Manipur was noteworthy. | Details : |  Group Captain Ichettira Iyappa Kuttappa (20758) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in the flying branch on 16 Jun 90. He is on the posted strength of Directorate of Intelligence since 09 Aug 10. He has approx. 1800 hrs of flying to his credit. He has been commended by AOC-in-C for devotion to duty and contribution to flight safety in Aug 1990 and by CISC for his valued contribution as an instructor of the prestigious DSSC in Jan 2008. Additionally, he is recipient of Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) in Jan 2002. In 1990, he safely recovered an Iskara aircraft after experiencing a total electric failure, despite his limited experience as ab-initio pilot and displayed utmost professionalism. In 2002, he carried out an unprecedented safe recovery of a MiG-21 Type 75 aircraft in an emergency which required skillful handling of the situation. He stayed calm and composed and displayed a sharp acumen in an adverse situation to bring the aircraft back safely. His outstanding leadership and selfless work was again tested during the Bhuj earthquake. His work in providing relief set an example for others to emulate. During his tenure as Directing Staff at DSSC, he was appreciated at all levels for inculcating synergy among students from all three services. An avid reader and a keen thinker, his background of having done Staff course in Germany provided him with the tools to make valuable contribution as a member of Training Team. In his current assignment as Director Operational Intelligence, he has led from the front. Despite intelligence being an entirely new field for him, he has quickly adapted to the nuances of collation, analysis and timely dissemination of intelligence and has brought about remarkable qualitative improvement in the functioning of his staff. His enthusiasm at work percolates down to his team and is displayed in the form of improved Monthly Intelligence Summary, new SIRs being issued, making new folders for easy access to information and enhanced interaction with other intelligence agencies. He has been instrumental in tapping and nurturing new sources for Air Force specific intelligence which have paid rich dividends. His contribution to analysis has led to assessment of Concept of Operations of our potential adversaries. His work has been appreciated at all levels. In his 21 years of service, he has held several important appointments including Flight Commander of a MiG-29 squadron and Flight Commander at Flying Instructors' School. He has also to his credit the distinction of forming a new squadron of the Advance Jet Trainer (AJT) Hawk aircraft and become its first Chief Flying Instructor (CFI). An alumni of Defence Services Staff College and a Category '(1; Qualified Flying Instructor, he has over 4500 hours of accident free flying. As the pioneer CFI of a Hawk squadron, he was instrumental in meticulously planning, formulating and conducting Semester - 2 training of Stage-Ill fighter pilots on the newly inducted Hawk aircraft. Under his proactive leadership, the squadron flew over 8000 hours. This entailed providing a high level of dynamism and motivation to all squadron personnel. It was due to his personal involvement that 'Flying Training Pattern' of the Hawk Operational Training Squadron was formulated and which has now become the model for all flying squadrons of the IAF The consistently high standards maintained by the squadron have been appreciated by both Aircrew Examining Board and Directorate of Air Staff Inspection teams. In addition, he was involved in the creation of state of the art infrastructure at Bidar that is conducive to the hi-tech flying training on the AJT. This is now being emulated by other squadrons of the IAF In his present appointment as Senior Flying Training Officer, he is currently instrumental in planning and implementation of all Hawk training curriculum of Stage-Ill (Fighter). With his keen initiative, he explored the local resources and indigenised the Video Debrief System of Hawk ac at just over 1% of the total cost quoted by the OEM. His brilliant foresight, planning and problem solving capabilities have resulted in the smooth progress of training of Hawk aircraft, despite numerous resources constraints. | Details : |  Group Captain Vikram Gaur (21008) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in the flying branch on 15 Dec 90. A graduate of the National Defence Academy, the officer has over 3200 hrs of total service flying and holds the distinction of being fully ops on four different types of fighter aircraft. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor (QH) and Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner (IRlE) who is also cleared for Low Level Aerobatics on Su-30MKI aircraft. An alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, he has held many important Command and Staff appointments including 'Commanding Officer of a frontline Su-30 MKI squadron and Joint Director Personnel Officers at Air HQ (VB). The officer was awarded commendation by Chief of the Air Staff in 2003. The officer has taken part in 'Op Safed Sagar'. He is presently the Ops 1B and Leader of the Command Air Tasking and Strike Planning for Aerial Warfare (CATSPAW) at Headquarters Western Air Command. Group Captain Vikram Gaur commanded a Su-30 MKI fighter squadron in 2008-10, during which period the squadron was made into the first type training Su-30 MKI squadron. During this period the squadron achieved highest training and operational standards and passed out more than hundred aircrew with impeccable flight safety record. Under his able command, the squadron undertook the herculean task of formulating the SOPS, conducted the first Weapons Camp and field tested the entire spectrum of Air to Ground Weaponry of the Su-30 MKI aircraft for the first time in the IAF The officer was appointed as CATSPAW Leader in Head Quarter Western Air Command in Mar 2011. During his tenure, a Table-Top Exercise: Indian Checkers, was conceptualised, planned and conducted for the first time in HQ WAC. As CATSPAW Leader, the officer efficiently planned and conducted the Gauntlet-V and Gauntlet-VI Exercises. He displayed an outstanding grasp of the intricate task of modern aerial warfare planning, essential for Command Air Ops. As Ops 1B, he has ensured an all-encompassing quantum improvement in the overall Op preparedness of the Command forces by synergising meaningful routine training with realistic implementation and thus developed combat potential during Command Level exercises. His focused effort has resulted in closer liaison with the three affiliated Army Commands, improved targeting philosophy and synergising the Air Land War concept in this Command, which was effectively displayed during numerous Army exercises. A Command Air tasking Tool- 'Air Operations System' and its integration with Integrated Command Air Tasking System (ICATS) was actively pursued by him to fruition. His unconditional involvement, devotion to duty, leadership qualities and the highest norms of interpersonal relations has ensured a positive and professional work environment. | Details : |  Wing Commander Updesh Sharma (21653) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in the Accounts branch on 14 Dec 9l. He is serving as the Member, Air Force Pay Implementation Cell (AFPIC). His ability to carry out in depth analysis with clarity of thought enabled the organisation to employ him on identifying 5th CPC anomalies while having rendered only six years of service. His active participation and contribution and skillful handling of the issues enabled IAF to resolve satisfactorily majority of the anomalies. The officer despite being junior in service, as Senior Accountant Officer and Senior Administrative Officer of two Air Force Stations, displayed exceptional leadership qualities to provide best admin support to the unit thereby keeping moral of personnel high at remote and isolated locations. The officer while posted to Naval Plans was involved in the perspective planning of Navy. A task for which he was recognised and commended by the Navy. The enormous knowledge and experience gained by the Officer during his previous tenure enabled the Air Force Pay Commission Cell (AFPCC) to formulate rational proposal on Pay, Pension, Allowances and Condition of services, which passed muster with other two services for consideration of 6th CPC in a time bound manner. His hard work and rational application of rules and regulations has contributed immensely in achieving the goals of AFPCC. The vexing issues of parity and level playing field with civilians were analysed by him. A major share of credit for achieving some important goals like higher Military Service Pay and MACP for Personnel Below Officer Rank, PBA to Wing Commanders does go to him. His advice is keenly sought by the other two Services, DIPAC/PPOC forums, because of his vast experience and expertise. The officer with his professional acumen ensured that no recoveries were affected from the pay of AVM and above. With his extraordinary inter-personal skills, Wg Cdr Updesh Sharma has developed an excellent rapport with the officials of Ministry of Defence, which helped immensely in issues of various Government orders without delay. The positive attitude in execution of his duties, humane and fair relationship with colleagues and subordinates is worth emulating. He has held various appointments as Technical Right Commander, Senior Engineering Officer of a Wing, Production Engineer at Base Repair Depot and an Instructor at Technical Type Training School. He is trained on MiG-23 BN and MiG-27 aircraft apart from training on Electronic Warfare systems. He is also trained on state-of-art avionic systems fitted on MiG-27 upgrade and overhaul of MiG-29 rotables. The officer has impeccable credentials on MiG-23/27 fleet since 1998. He has achieved extraordinary productivity and quality in various maintenance set-ups. By virtue of his training abroad on upgraded systems the officer was specially chosen to work as Technical Right Commander of MiG-27 upgrade(UPG) aircraft. He planned and executed build-up of seven MiG-27 ML prolonged aircraft on ground in record time. His analytical mind, undaunted efforts and perseverance not only helped in identifying critical issues affecting the reliability and maintain ability of MiG-27 UPG aircraft but also resulted in resolving them through repeated discussions with design agencies and suggesting remedial measures. By virtue of his knowledge, he redeemed himself as a single point contact on all MiG-27 UPG related issues and has been a key member of core group involving agencies like Defence Avionics Research Establishment, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). He has also been instrumental in setting up of various test facilities related to MiG 27 UPG avionics. The officer over the last ten years has contributed exceptionally to the Organisation through his steadfast perseverance, devotion to profession, sincerity of purpose and quest for professional excellence. His contribution towards skill enhancement of young air warriors has been commendable and worth emulating by one and all. Being a 'Senior Engineer (Aircraft), of an Air Force Station dealing with more than one hundred aircraft of six different fleets, he has proved his mettle and excelled in each and every area. | Details : |  Wing Commander Paramjeet Singh (21929) was commissioned in Indian Air Force in Administration/ Fighter Controller branch on 10 Jun 92. He is on the posted strength of one of the Pill Force Movement Liaison Unit (AFMLU) since 06 Apr 09 as Commanding Officer. Wg Cdr Paramjeet Singh, as a young fighter controller bagged his first AOC-in-C commendation by building a helipad at 260 SU and contributed towards the unit securing 'Best Air Defence' unit title in 2000. In 2006 as CO of a sensitive, isolated and Cl affected mobile radar unit in the Northern Sector, he altered the temporary setup to a permanent setup. He was instrumental in acquiring of defence land from Govt of J&K and creation of a 1.7 Km long road from the radar location to the highway for ensuring logistics support to the earlier estranged radar location. During this tenure he voluntarily took over as Dett Cdr of an lAF adopted village 'Ursa' during earthquake and was commended by the CAS. In 2008 at newly established Joint Control and Analysis Centre (JCAC) within AAI complex, his efforts resulted in acquiring additional space for this new unit collocated with a civilian organisation. He made sure that all auxiliary ops systems were incorporated with AAI and put into use, including complete air-conditioning of the unit setup. His efforts were once again commended by the CAS. In 2009 he took over as CO of a AFMLU, a highly operational and sensitive unit. He extraordinarily changed the setup of this former diminutive setup within the AAI complex. In addition to acquiring the added space, complete restructuring of the available plinth by creating perpendicular double-tier mezzanine floor, setting up of customised furniture with latest workstations and modular bunk beds to provide for a better quality of working environment in 24 x 7 ops. He ensured installation of systems like IACCS, VCCS, FPDS, TADIDS, Raytheon Radar Picture and their display on LCD screens in the ops room for the greatest situational awareness of the ops crew. For his exceptional contribution towards the unit improvements, he was once again commended by the CAS. The ops room and liaison of the unit were declared 'Exceptional' during Dte of Air Staff Inspection visit in 2011. His innovative and self-initiative attitude led to the setting up of Airport Facilitation Cell (AFC), lAF Publicity Pavilion and space for mounting of two fighter aircraft (MiG-23 BN) at Terminal-3 in IGI Airport. This cell has been recently been inaugurated by the CAS. The AFC is presently serving all defence personnel and their families transiting through IGI Airport. The other publicity projects are aimed at inspiring and attracting the younger generation to join IAF. His persistent efforts bagged a space for these three projects 'free of cost' from Mls GMR Ltd, making a total savings for the IAF to the tune of approximately Rs. two crores per annum on a permanent basis. | Details : |  Group Captain Ajay Kumar Singh (21985) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a navigator in the flying branch on 13 Jun 92. He has been in command of Pechora Missile Squadron since 05 Jul10. He is a Cat 'A officer and is a qualified Senior Sector Controller. His vast experience in Air Defence operations include important milestones like Command Examiner, Air Force Examiner, Directing Staff in Exercise Akraman and Instructor in Guided Weapon Training Institute. He holds the distinction of supervising live firings of Pechora, OSA-AK-M and IGlJ missiles and inspecting these systems in the capacity of Joint Director Air Staff Inspection. A case study of projecting SRE radar picture in Base Operations Control Centre was carried out by the officer which was later implemented throughout the Air Force. On assuming command of the squadron, he set about enhancing operational preparedness and combat potential of the squadron. Through his zeal and sustained hard work, he ensured that the squadron achieved highest ever upgradation in category state in any given year. The officer also took on the mantle of improving the combat potential of the combatants of South Western Air Command by conducting pre-cat board training capsule of Pechora, OSA-AK-M and IGLA operations and Terminal Weapon Control Center seminar for Base Air Defence Officer and BMC. The officer was specially co-opted for Command Air Staff Inspection and Dte of Air Staff Inspection in Western Air Command. A service paper written by the officer on optimum utilisation of specialist vehicles is under consideration and will eventually result in huge saving to the exchanger. In Nov 11, his squadron was detailed as Range Duty Squadron for undertaking live firing of Pechora Missiles for the year 2011-12. His foresight and meticulous operational planning ensured that squadron mobilized with about 90 vehicles and trailers, fired the allotted missiles and returned back in March this year without any accident / incident. The squadron under his leadership pushed the performance envelope to achieve a record success rate and serviceability state with no failure being attributed to the vintage equipment. His dynamic leadership and ingenuity ensured radar antenna being brought by train for the first time ever thus saving substantial amount for the exchequer. Henceforth this would become a template and save about Rs. 30 lakhs every alternate year. The officer's dedication towards the fleet and initiative resulted in live streaming of the Pechora firing for the first time to the entire IAF He has also taken on the mantle of archiving the fleet history for the first time in the form of a movie and coffee table book. His sustained efforts have received praise and adulation from higher echelons.
