Flight Lieutenant Krishan Adhar Singh Tyagi has been serving with the Transport Training Wing since January, 1969. He has flown more than 3,680 hours, out of which 1,340 hours are on instructional duties. On the 27th February, 1971, he was Captain of an aircraft. During the flight, the port engine failed. The aircraft was fully loaded and even with full power on the starboard engine it gradually lost height. Eventually, when only 4,000 feet above sea level it was able to maintain height but at that height it had to fly in cloud and heavy rain. He diverted to the nearest airfield. In order to do so, he had to fly through bad weather for nearly 45 minutes. At the airport, he carried out a safe landing even though the runway was water-logged due to a heavy downpour. Throughout the emergency, he displayed great presence of mind and excellent airmanship. |
