Details : Wing Commander Sanjay Chopra (23786) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in the flying branch on 16 Dec 95 and has been the first Commanding Officer of a premiere MI- 17VSHelicopter Unit since I I Feb 13. Wg Cdr Chopra is a Qualified Flying Instructor and Helicopter Combat Leader with vast experience on the Mi-17 fleet. On assuming Command of the Unit, he took on the challenge of moving the new unit barely four months after' its raising, to another location to undertake a unique task in difficult conditions. His remarkable planning acumen and incredible leadership qualities can be gauged from the fact that the unit commenced flying within a week after relocation. Under his able guidance, the unit was able to undertake all its op tasks in a short time. This feat was achieved with immaculate planning in terms of maintenance, an exceptional training routine and dedication to the cause. Despite the initial shortages in manpower and a large number of maintenance related hurdles he pushed to maintain a steady four aircraft permanent detachment while ensuring flight safety and high levels of morale of the men under him to achieve the unique task entrusted to the unit. During the Assembly Elections of Chhattisgarh and the Lok Sabha Elections 2014, Wg Cdr Chopra controlled ad coordinated the helicopter operations in support of the Election Commission and Govt of Chhattisgarh. Operations in the difficult conditions would not have been possible without his tremendous initiative and leadership qualities. Under his able guidance, multiple missions were flown safely and successfully in spite of the increased threat emanating from the anti-national elements in the region. For exceptional devotion to duty, Hon'ble President is pleased to award Vayu Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty) to Wing Commander Sanjay Chopra.
