Details : Group Captain Ajay Kumar Singh (21985) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a navigator in the flying branch on 13 Jun 92. He has been in command of Pechora Missile Squadron since 05 Jul10. He is a Cat 'A officer and is a qualified Senior Sector Controller. His vast experience in Air Defence operations include important milestones like Command Examiner, Air Force Examiner, Directing Staff in Exercise Akraman and Instructor in Guided Weapon Training Institute. He holds the distinction of supervising live firings of Pechora, OSA-AK-M and IGlJ missiles and inspecting these systems in the capacity of Joint Director Air Staff Inspection. A case study of projecting SRE radar picture in Base Operations Control Centre was carried out by the officer which was later implemented throughout the Air Force. On assuming command of the squadron, he set about enhancing operational preparedness and combat potential of the squadron. Through his zeal and sustained hard work, he ensured that the squadron achieved highest ever upgradation in category state in any given year. The officer also took on the mantle of improving the combat potential of the combatants of South Western Air Command by conducting pre-cat board training capsule of Pechora, OSA-AK-M and IGLA operations and Terminal Weapon Control Center seminar for Base Air Defence Officer and BMC. The officer was specially co-opted for Command Air Staff Inspection and Dte of Air Staff Inspection in Western Air Command. A service paper written by the officer on optimum utilisation of specialist vehicles is under consideration and will eventually result in huge saving to the exchanger. In Nov 11, his squadron was detailed as Range Duty Squadron for undertaking live firing of Pechora Missiles for the year 2011-12. His foresight and meticulous operational planning ensured that squadron mobilized with about 90 vehicles and trailers, fired the allotted missiles and returned back in March this year without any accident / incident. The squadron under his leadership pushed the performance envelope to achieve a record success rate and serviceability state with no failure being attributed to the vintage equipment. His dynamic leadership and ingenuity ensured radar antenna being brought by train for the first time ever thus saving substantial amount for the exchequer. Henceforth this would become a template and save about Rs. 30 lakhs every alternate year. The officer's dedication towards the fleet and initiative resulted in live streaming of the Pechora firing for the first time to the entire IAF He has also taken on the mantle of archiving the fleet history for the first time in the form of a movie and coffee table book. His sustained efforts have received praise and adulation from higher echelons. For distinguished service of high order, Hon'ble President is pleased to award Vishisht Seva Medal to Group Captain Ajay Kumar Singh.
