Details : Sqn Ldr Mohan Rao (17343-K) Flying (Pilot) has been on the posted strength of a Fighter Squadron, since 27 Apr 97. He is the Flight Commander since Apr 99 and is a Qualified Flying Instructor.

Muntho Dhalo Attack: On 15 Jun 99, he was responsible for acquiring the largest enemy camp in the Batalik Sector. He followed up on 16 Jun 99 by leading a two aircraft mission, armed with 6x250 Kg bombs successfully destroying the Eastern side to the camp. This attack was responsible for annihilating the enemy's resolve leading to marginalising of enemy ground force activity. Sqn Ldr Mohan Rao launched this attack undeterred by reports of Surface to Air Missiles having been fired from the camp, with total dedication and devotion to accomplish the assigned task.

LGB Attack by Night: On the night of 0708 Jul 99 Sqn Ldr Rao carried out an attack on the Ridgeline West of Tiger Hill armed with a Laser Guided Bomb. The target location necessitated an attack profiles that would bring his aircraft within the launch envelope of shoulder fired missiles. He struck the target with determination of a rare kind and scored a direct hit as reported by our ground forces.

During the operations, Sqn Ldr M Rao flew 27 operational missions which include ten live bombing missions. Sqn Ldr Mohan Rao displayed immense devotion, involvement and professionalism of the highest order during planning and execution of the missions under hostile conditions. Awareness of missiles being launched at him only motivated him further to decimate the enemy.

For the conspicuous gallantry, valour displayed in the face of the enemy and exceptional devotion to duty, the Hon'ble President is pleased to award 'Vayu Sena Medal' to Sqn Ldr Mohan Rao.

Details : Group Captain Mohan Rao VM (17343) Flying (pilot) was commissioned as a Pilot in the Flying Branch on 22 Dec 1983. He has commanded a fighter squadron and been a Directing Staff at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. For display of courage the officer was awarded Vayu Sena Medal Gallantry on 15 Aug 1999. He took over Command of Air Force Station Jaisalmer on 01 Mar 2006. During his tenure of 17 months, the station performed exceptionally in Operations, Maintenance and Administration. All tasks given to the station were performed diligently and with professional competence. The station hosted an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Conclave in September 2007 followed by Command Flight Safety Council Meeting. This was followed by a Directorate of Air Staff Inspection in December 2007. The Fire Power Demonstration of the IAF was conducted in December 2007 in a very competent and capable manner in the best traditions of the IAF, which was appreciated by all the dignitaries. Exercise Brazen Chariots was held in March 2008, in which the station was completely involved. The Parliamentary Committee on Defence visited the station in 2007 and this visit was conducted in a very befitting manner. On the Administrative front, the Other Than Married Accommodation (OTM) of a Signals Unit and Transportable Radar Unit was crystallized, as well as the Security Wall for the Station. The station was awarded the 'Best in Administration' Trophy of the South Western Air Command for 2007, which indicates the importance given by the station to this vital aspect. Gp Capt Rao has knit the station as a team and always led from the front, which is very clear in the way the station performed during his tenure. For his professional competence, dedication, leadership and distinguished service of high order, Hon'ble President is pleased to award 'Vishisht Seva Medal' to Group Captain Mohan Rao VM.
