Became an Air Traffic Controller, after commissioning, from 1977 to 1997, and sought premature retirement w.e.f. 31 January 2001, after completing 24 years and 1 month of service. During the service, obtained "Cat-A" , the highest professional qualification in ATC. Was an ATC Examiner for various Commands during the career. Was also posted as a Dy Director (Ops) ATC, at Directorate of Air Traffic Services, Air HQ, from 1993 to 1997. As an Air Traffic Controller, received Commendations of AOC-in-C, on two occasions. In addition, was also awarded the "Good Show" in the Flight Safety Magazine, on two separate professional flourishes. Have the distinction of being a team member of the first Air Force Contingent which was inducted into Siachen Glacier, in 1984. Was instrumental in setting up the first ATC set up at Base Camp (mouth of Glacier). Served for many months at Base Camp, Forward Base and Thois. Was, also, part of the first Air Force Contingent inducted into Vavuniya, Sri Lanka, as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Forces, during the IPKF operations in Sri Lanka. Had the honour of being the first Indian Air Traffic Controller at Vavuniya Airport, Sri Lanka. Was a regular writer of articles for the Air Force Flight Safety Magazines as well as local Station Journals. Some of such articles also featured in The Indian Express and The Tribune, newspapers. Was one of the ATC Officers' Team members who wrote and published the 3rd edition of the Air Traffic Control Manual, the Bible of the Air Traffic Controllers of Indian Air Force, Navy and Army. Was also, part of the ATC Officers' Team, at Air HQ, which initiated and introduced the "Controllers' Badge" for the ATC and FC controllers in 1995. Coincidently, during the entire service career, was posted to "fighter bases" only, as an ATC officer.

"Took active part in the following OPERATIONS of Indian Armed Forces:-

1. Operation Meghdoot : India launched Operation Meghdoot on 13 April 1984 when the Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force went into the Siachen Glacier. Flight Lieutenant Pradeep Chawla (14728T) was part of this launching operation, along with Kumaon Regiment, representing the IAF, for creation of helipads /landing spots for helicopter operations and provision of safe, orderly & efficient Air Traffic Control in the Glacier region.
Within a few days, the Indians were in control over most of the glacier. The two passes due to Indian military pre-emption – Sia La and Bilfond La were secured by India. Flight Lieutenant Pradeep Chawla was awarded the prestigious ""Commendation by Chief of Air Staff' for his participation.

2. Operation Brasstacks : Operation Brasstacks was a code-name of a major military exercise of the Indian Army in Rajasthan state of India, that took place in 1986. As part of a series of exercises to simulate the operational capabilities of the Indian armed forces, it was the major and largest troop mobilizations of Indian forces in the Indian subcontinent. Squadron Leader Pradeep Chawla (14728T) was deployed in forward IAF base in the Western Sector as part of this operation, as a Radar Controller, to ensure safe recovery of the IAF aircraft and maintaining a strict vigil within the vast airspace against enemy aircraft.

3. Operation Pawan : Squadron Leader Pradeep Chawla (14728T) took an active part in Operation Pawan, as part of Indian Peace Keeping Forces, in Sri Lanka, in 1987. Operation Pawan was the code-name assigned to the operation by the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) to take control of Jaffna, Trincomali, Vavunia, etc, from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), better known as the Tamil Tigers, in1987' to enforce the disarmament of the LTTE as a part of the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord. He was deployed with the Indian Army in the jungles of Vavuniya, and took over the control of Vavuniya Airfield and Air Traffic Control, from Sri Lankan Air Force. He ensured safe recovery of the flights participating in the operation. "
