During the devastating earthquake that rocked the Gujarat and Kutch region on 26 January 2001. The Air Force Station itself was badly affected, with heavy loss to life and property. As the Station Commander, Gp Capt Dhanda took stock of the situation, conducting all rescue and relief operations. He relentlessly pursued all rescue and relief activities on a war footing, and ensured that the airbase was quickly made available and capable of receiving aircraft with relief supplies, and for sending out casualties to other bases. These activities were effectively coordinated with the civil agencies, and with the Army. This helped in synergising the relief and rescue operations, which drew praise from all quarters. Due to his untiring efforts, planning and positive attitude in the face of such a devastating natural calamity, the effects were made fairly manageable.
