Details :

Squadron Leader Shamanna Seshadri Iyengar (11531) Med was commissioned in Army Medical Corps on 22 Jan 68. Later, he was seconded to Air Force and he has since served in Air Force units till he attained MD in General Medicine from Pune University in 1976. He was also decorated with DGAFMS Medal for securing first position in Medical Officers' Junior Commander's Course in 1974. He was appointed as staff surgeon to the Chief of the Air Staff in Sept 78. His duties as staff surgeon to CAS involved him in caring for the very senior and juniors alike for which he displayed extraordinary professional competence, zeal and initative. He has by pleasant manners and sustained hard work won the applause and appreciation of the patients treated by him. During the course of his work he has been perpetually on day and night call and has shown initiative and resourcefulness of the highest order in dealing with medical emergencies.

He bears quite pleasant manners and attends to the problems of the sick and injured in the most exceptional order, by which he is held in high esteem by all the patients irrespective of their ranks. He has proved himself almost indispensable in acute medical emergencies like heart attack cases by promptly attending during their crisis and accompanying the cases till handing over them to care of doctors in hospitals. This gesture on his part has been talk among the personnel of this Station/Air HQ.

During his tenure as Staff Surgeon he established Medical Specialising Clinic to provide specialist cover to all personnel and families. He also organised a special cell to detect, treat and institute proper follow up of Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension and Ischameic Heart disease cases so that such patients can live long and enjoy their life like normal persons. He has been able to achieve spectacular success in his endeavour.

He has been instrumental in establishing a full fledged Physio-Occupational Therapy Room where adequate treatment for MusculoSkeletal complaints are now provided. With his untiring efforts he could add Short Wave Diathermy machine and an additional portable ECG machine so that emergencies can be attended to round the clock with least delay. He has also arranged additional facilities for various bio-chemical tests which otherwise were available only in hospitals. He has endeared himself to all by providing prompt care even in other medical institutions in Delhi by maintaining close and friendly liaison with such organisations. He also takes special interest in keeping himself fully acquainted with the latest developments in the field of Medical Science and has number of publications to his credit.

For his professional knowledge of a high order, devotion to duty, sustained hard work, zeal and initiative, the President is pleased to award Vishisht Seva Medal to Squadron Leader Shamanna Seshadri Iyengar.
