The safety, honour and welfare of your country come first, always and every time.
The honour, welfare and comfort of the men you command come next.
Your own ease, comfort and safety come last, always and every time.
- Field Marshal Philip Walhouse Chetwode
Commander-in-Chief, British Indian Army
When a man exposes himself to certain death, it is a kind of disciplined valour which can only arise when he has made a habit of courage. It becomes second nature, because he has ruled out the idea of cowardice. It becomes a matter of honour for him to be a good soldier. The men in this album have displayed that very measure of gallantry and while they paid for it with their lives, they became immortal heroes. We look forward to contributions from the relatives of other fallen soldiers and please do contact the webmasters of the BR Army site for further information.
