A Dipti Bhalla/Kunal Verma film
Made in 1992, to commemorate
60 years of the IAF, with funding from the Tata Group, Salt of the
Earth offered for the first time an unprecedented look into the
growth and development of this formidable force.
Presented by Rakesh Sharma,
this is a wonderful docu drama made even more appealing by the fact
that young officers of the day are enacting the roles of their illustrious
predecessors. Backed up with historical footage of the then Royal
Indian Air Force taken at Miranshah, the NWFP, the Burma theater
and then of the 1947-48 valley ops, this is a must see film for
any one who wanted to know about the evolution of Indias air
force.
All the conflicts which
the IAF has participated in up to 1992 are covered. A noteworthy
scene is an enactment of the famous Longewala battle ,which an actual
company of 23 Punjab gladly volunteered for with back up from the
Armoured Corps and Hunters specially flown to Jaisalmer for the
shoot.
And for those who are
curious about what aircraft feature in the film, well all the aircraft
up to 1992 are shown here. Including the then recent acquisitions:
the Mirage 2000 and Mig 29,with the latter painted in gaily ACM
colours and there are shots of the rarely seen Canberra gently dipping
and the mighty Mig-25 coming headlong at the viewer and taking off.
Nothing can describe this massive mainstay of the IAFs recce
force. It has to be seen to be believed. Theres also incredible
footage of Hunters and Mig-21s flying together over the plains of
Punjab. The film ends with a wonderful sequence of Maritime Strike
Jaguars taking off and flying over the sea along the Konkan coast.
Truly,a great classic.
