Army suffers casualities at Daruchian

Dec 14, Northern Sector : Sources have confirmed today that the 14th Grenediers unit had suffered very high casualities in an unsucesfull attempt to take the post of Daruchian in the Poonch sector.

More than 52 soldiers are believed to have been killed or missing, including five officers and four JCOs.  The attack took place yesterday night in which all the companies of 14 Grenediers were involved.

The Indian officers were leading from the front and Almost all the company officers had lost thier lives in the assault.

This was the first offensive action undertaken by the Indian Army in this sector.

Dec 14, Ladakh: The operations in this sector can be rightly be termed as "Battles on top of the world". The troops in this sector had to assault and occupy posts sometimes upto 18000 feet altitude. The Partapur Sector as its known here is under the command of Colonel Udai Singh.

The operations in this sector are being undertaken by troops of the Ladakh Scouts Battalion assisted by the militia Nubra Guards. The Nubra Guards is an ad-hoc   trained civilian force that was provided arms and training in fifteen days flat. Since almost all of its members were the tough ladakhis, coping with the extreme conditions in this area is easy for them.

Leading the motley mixture of Ladakh Scouts and the Nubra Guards is Major Chewang Rinchen, MVC and SM. Major Rinchen is a legend in these areas among the Ladakhis. He was originally a member of the Nubra Guards during the 1948 Kashmir Operations. He was one of the youngest soldiers to receive the MVC in that operations. Shakargarh attack fails. Large number of troops missing

Dec 14, Shakar garh sector: The Indian army attack to occupy the Shakargarh town last night failed as the Pakistani counter attacked fiercely. The  4 Grenadiers had suffered high casualities and more than 72 of its troops are killed or missing  including thier commander Maj Chaudhary. Pakistan Air Force is very much active in this area. An AOP aircraft of No.660 Sqn flown by Capt P K Gaur was shot down today.

Dec 14, Eastern Sector: The first artillery shells fired by the Indian Army landed in Dacca today for the first time the war began, even as General Manekshaw's message to the Civilian advisor, Maj Gen Rao Farman Ali had sunk in.

General Manekshaw had referred that he would shell Dacca and reduce its garrision if the Pakistanis dont consider the option of surrender. Today the threat had turned out to be reality. The shelling of Dacca

had been made possible by the advance of IV Corps troops along the Narsingdi Road.

It is no small news last week as troops of 57 Mountain Division  launched a heliborne  operation to cross the massive Meghna River.
