The Security Research Review aims to provide an apolitical perspective on issues relating to the security of the Indian subcontinent. While catering to the information needs of a Global India, the Security Research Review also seeks to reflect aspects of the global security environment relevant to readers in India. We aim to build knowledge about the subcontinent by fostering scholarship and encouraging individual writers. Lastly we hope to provide a forum for dialogue about India's security needs. 

The Security Research Review invites you to submit contributions containing original work, consistent with our mission statement. We seek a diversity of ideas and hypothesis backed by a substantive logic and plain fact. Once such pieces are received they are subjected to peer review. Our guidelines to reviewers are based on the evolving best practices of peer-reviewed publications in the scientific, engineering, medical and strategic affairs communities. This in turn reflects the diverse backgrounds of our reviewers. Our researchers are drawn from a cross-section of academic faculty in various disciplines, full-time researchers, physicians, engineers, and graduate students, serving or retired military or other government personnel from several countries.

Contribution Guidelines

We accept the following types of contributions:

Opinion: The author is asked to present a personal view of issues. Submissions must be below 1500 words. Submissions are read and discussed by the editorial team prior to release. A contribution editor may contact you for clarifications or style changes should the need arise. You may also be asked to provide a suggested reading list. Opinion pieces are published under the following headers:

Research: The author is asked to present original research work in a referenced format. The author will also provide an executive summary of the piece. The authors are encouraged to separate fact from opinion in the piece itself. All opinions and trends must be summarized in the concluding paragraph.

Three referees chosen by the contribution editor will review the submission. At least one of these referees will be an expert in the area. In the review process the author may be asked to rework the piece depending on referee suggestions. The comments of the area referees must be addressed for a submission to complete the review process. A simple majority among the referees will be used to determine the suitability for publication. Accepted research papers will be published under the following headers:

  • Research and Analysis (sample),
  • Military Analysis (sample),
  • Technical Study (sample),
  • Photo Essay (sample).

If you are submitting previously published work from other journals or material that is under consideration for publication elsewhere – kindly explicitly indicate such facts to the contribution editor.

Exceptional Contributions

Occasionally we will accept certain contributions that do not exactly fit the aforementioned formats. These will be carried under the Specials header.

We also accept Research Reviews. In these contributions, the author is expected to reference the publication that is being reviewed and offer critical commentary on the same.

Notes 

  1. We welcome contributions from retired security officers provided they have cleared the stipulated period after end of service. The contributions may be subject to peer review depending on the content.
  2. Serving security officers in India (and elsewhere) may submit their contributions only after the obtaining requisite clearance to do so from the appropriate ministry of the Government of India (in their respective governments). Kindly present correspondence relating to the clearance before sending in the material for publication. Submissions made without the appropriate correspondence will be summarily rejected. 
  3. Submission dates and deadlines are to be set by the contribution editor. Any correspondence in this regard must be addressed to the appropriate contribution editor.

Technical Issues

  1. All submissions must be in English. Any text in other languages must be followed by an English translation.
  2. The submission must be in Microsoft Word document format.
  3. All references in the Word Document must be linked using the Endnote format.
  4. All images must be sourced. In case of original image or graphical content kindly indicate the release of copyright.
  5. All maps must be prepared in collaboration with a contribution editor.

Review Process Times

The submission process is the responsibility of a contribution editor. The contribution editor will indicate the time to process the submission and will be your contact point for all enquiries relating to the same.

An average research article may take three to four weeks to complete the review process after submission. An opinion piece will take a week to clear the review process.

All submissions from the Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Iraq, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Republic of China, Republic of Korea, and the Republic of Myanmar may take a longer time to review.

All submissions from the Peoples Republic of China, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea, may be subject to process involving more than three referees.

Notes for Reviewers

If you are designated as a reviewer by a contribution editor, kindly read the following:

  1. Kindly fix the deadlines with your contribution editor.
  2. All reviewer comments should be summarized two short (200 words or less) paragraphs. The first paragraph should contain your view of the submission and the second should contain the changes you want to see made in the piece.
  3. Kindly explicitly indicate your recommendation regarding publication in a single line at the end of your comments.
