INDIA'S PEACEKEEPERS

BHARAT RAKSHAK Main Page

The concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the entire world, a family) propounded by the ancient sages of India found expression in the foreign policy proclaimed and practiced by Independent India. Therefore it was not mere coincidence, when the need arose for the United Nations to find a force to keep peace between the warring groups of humanity, it looked to none other than India. Known for their equanimity and forbearance, Indian troops have been popular wherever they have gone. India has always contributed generously to the UN demands for peace-keeping.

Whenever the UN sought her assistance, India has always tried to respond positively. There have been many cases where India, on her own initiative, has tried to help the UN in carrying out its role. There have also been cases where India assisted countries, even outside the UN, in the maintenance of peace. Apart from contributing troops for peace-keeping. India has also provided advisors, observers and staff to the UN, and also logistical support. In some cases, Indian troops have had to fight to implement the UN mandate. Due to their impartiality, competence and professionalism, Indian units and personnel are always in demand.

The Indian Army has taken part in numerous UN sponsored missions, in which Indian soldiers participated as observers, peacekeepers and peace-enforces. India has thus made a very significant contribution to world peace and has kept the UN flag flying often in hostile environments. India has sacrificed a large number of our men to save the lives of helpless victims of wars, internecine internal conflicts and collapsing economies. Whether it be peacekeeping, peace-enforcement or mercy mission, India has always been in the lead. The tributes paid to our officers and troops during various peace missions are a reflection of the sense of duty, discipline and efficiency of our Army.
