Comments: The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved the purchase of three additional Krivak III Class frigates, on 06 July 2006, at a cost of a cost of US $1.1 billion. Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, stated after the CCS meeting, that the first vessel would be delivered five years after the signing of the contract and the following two ships would be delivered within 12 months (in six-month intervals) after the delivery of the first boat. The Defence Minister also stated that the CCS approved an additional US $87 million for unspecified equipment. Naval sources indicate that these funds are earmarked for arming these frigates with the supersonic BrahMos (PJ-10) ASCM. This will be the primary difference against the first batch of Talwar Class frigates.
The Yantar Shipyard - based in Kaliningrad - will build the three frigates, however the first vessel was laid down at the Pribaltiyskaya Shipyard, also in Kaliningrad. RIA Novosti reported on 08 October 2009, that names for the three vessels have been selected. Sergei Mikhailov - spokesman for the Yantar SY in Kaliningrad - stated, "Three frigates for the Indian Navy, which are being built at our shipyard, have been given names - the Teg [Saber], the Tarkash [Quiver], and the Trikand [Bow]. Indian President Pratibha Patil has personally named the ships." He also added, "All three hulls have been completed. The first frigate in the series is expected to float out in October. The shipyard should be able to deliver all three vessels to the customer in 2011-2012."
