SAMUDRA CLASS Vessel Type: Pollution Control Vessel (PCV). Future Commissions:
Samudra Prahari;
Laid Down - Not Known, Launched - 20 March 2007, Commissioning -
2007. Deep Displacement: 3300 tons. Dimensions:
Length - 94 metres Main Machinery: The vessel is powered by two 3000 kW Bergen B32 diesel engines and two 2300 kW electric boosters, with a twin screw Kamewa Ulstein CP main propellers. The ship will feature two 2300 shaft generators/motors, four 1250 kW main diesel generators, one 400 kW harbour diesel generator and one 180 kW emergency generator. The boat will be fitted with a single Ulstein Aquamaster combined swing-up azimuth / side thruster forward with a continuous rating of 883 kW. The vessel will include two independent Tenfjord rotary vane steering gears and two Ulstein flap rudders. These ships also feature Rauma Brattvaag deck machinery, an Ulstein automation system & switchboards and an Intering anti-roll stabilisation system. Maximum Speed: 20.5 Knots. Endurance: 6000 nautical miles at 14 knots. Complement: 111 personnel, including safety equipment. Cargo Capacity:
50 cubic meters of heated jet water. Pollution Control Capabilities: The vessel is arranged / equipped for sweeping operations by the use of the onboard sweeping arms or inflatable oil booms; oil recovery by various oil skimmer systems; act as command central in multi-vessel operations; be the base for beach cleaning operations; separation of oil from recovered oil and water; and storage of recovered oil in dedicated tanks or inflated tanks. External Fire-Fighting System: Two 1200 m3/h capacity monitors, with a throwing length of 120 meters and a throwing height of 50 meters. It also features a water curtain for self protection of the vessel. Communication / Navigation: Not Known. Platform Management System: These vessels will feature an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) and its Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) which will enable the vessel to be manoeuvred in restricted areas with precision. Helicopter Capacity: Possibly one modified HAL Dhruv, in a pollution control role. Weapons: Not Known. Comments: ABG Shipyard, the largest private yard in India, has tasked Rolls-Royce in the design & development of three pollution control vessels for the Indian Coast Guard. These ships, based on the Rolls-Royce's UT517 ship design, will assist in minimizing the damage caused by potential environmental crises – particularly oil spills - from ageing merchant ships in Indian waters. The vessels will feature a range of Rolls-Royce propulsion, steering and motion control equipment and will be built at the ABG Shipyard in Surat in a £50 million contract with the Coast Guard. The contract from ABG is worth £14 million to Rolls-Royce. These ships will have a helicopter capable of overseeing operations and will use a boom system to contain oil spillages. Contaminated water can be pumped on board and analysed in a laboratory. The oil can then be separated and held in storage tanks or inflatable barges which can be towed behind the vessel to free up deck space. Additional duties will be surveillance & law enforcement, anti smuggling & fishery protection, assistance with salvage and fire fighting, search & rescue and collecting data. The advanced user friendly equipment onboard would be used for containment, recovery, separation and dispersal of pollutants. High tech control systems would enable simultaneous tasks to be performed by a single operator. The vessel will be fitted with latest pollution control equipment including two rigid sweeping arms enabling it to contain oil spill whilst in motion. An advanced software would assist in predicting the spread of the complex oil spill pattern. The vessel is designed to recover the lightest to the most viscous oil spills, at the rate of 300 tons per hour. The unique anti-roll stabilization system is the first to be incorporated on any Naval or Coast Guard vessel built in India. |
