NMM Luigi Durand De la Penne (D 560) of the Italian Navy viewed from INS Mumbai. Commissioned into the Italian Navy in 1993, the De la Penne is a 5000 ton multi-role warship which is able to perform anti-air defence for protecting task forces & convoys, anti-submarine & anti-surface warfare operations, assistance during landing operations and coastal bombardment. The NMM stands for Nave Marina Militare and is the ship prefix that is used in the Italian Navy. She is named after an Italian naval diver from the Second World War. His most notable contribution to the Italian war effort was the near sinking of HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant at Alexandria, Eygpt in December 1941. Both Royal Navy [RN] vessels were however repaired and put back into service. Luigi (11 February 1914 - 17 January 1992) retired from the Italian Navy with the rank of Ammiraglio di Squadra (Vice Admiral).
