Commissioned into the Soviet Navy (Voyenno-Morskoy Flot SSSR) in 1987 as the Baku, was the fourth in the series of the Project 1143 Kiev Class aviation cruiser. She was named after the largest city (Baku) in Azerbaijan. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city of Baku became part of independent Azerbaijan. The ship was thereafter renamed as the Admiral Gorshkov, in honour of Sergei Georgievich Gorshkov - Commander in Chief of the Soviet Navy during the Cold War. On 20 January 2004, she was sold to the Indian Navy and she will be renamed as INS Vikramaditya. Tomasz does an excellent line drawing of the Gorshkov prior to her refit for the Indian Navy and at top right, he does a preliminary drawing (top side only) of how the vessel might look after her make over.
