Akash successfully test-fired
(Defense Aerospace, 05 March 2002)
India said it had successfully test-fired a surface-to-air missile on March 05th. The multi-target Akash (Sky) was fired from a missile range in the eastern state of Orissa at 5:25 p.m. (11:55 GMT), MoD officials said in New Delhi. The Akash, with a range of 25 km (15.5 miles), had undergone several tests earlier but this launch was aimed at checking its guidance systems, an official said. The 650 kg (1,430 lbs.) Akash, which India likens to a Patriot missile, is equipped with a radar that can track 64 aircraft beyond its own strike range.
