CORPS OF MILITARY POLICE

Seva Tatha Sahayat

The Corps of Military Police (CMP) assist Army formations in maintaining a high standard of military discipline, prevent breaches of Army rules & regulations and aid in preserving a degree high morale among Officers, JCOs and Other Ranks. Members of this elite Corps distinguish themselves from other Army personnel by adorning red berets and white belts and are known as 'Red Berets' within Army circles. During war operations, the Corps supervises the collection of all Prisoners-Of-War and other suspects. Its origins date back to 1940, when Indian troops joined the Royal Military Police in the Middle East, during World War II, and formed the nucleus CMP (I).

The Corps have been exceptional in their service in counter-insurgency (COIN) operations in Jammu & Kashmir, with one particular unit - Delta Force Provost Unit - deployed in the district of Doda, the third largest geographical area after Leh and Kargil. Known for its rocky & hostile landscape, Doda is considered to a safe haven for a large number of terrorists who emanate from various religious factions in Pakistan. Raised in July 1994, the Delta Force Provost Unit forms an indispensable element of the Delta Counter Insurgency Force - which in itself was formally raised on 06 September 1994. The principle role of Delta Force is to conduct COIN operations in the Doda district.

Personnel of the Provost Unit are also responsible to ensure a safe journey along the National Highway 1A and 1B which is the sole link to the Kashmir Valley and Doda district. NH-1A and 1B are infamous for its precipitous roadways over rocky & steep terrain and are also susceptible to attacks from Pakistani-supported terrorists. Mother Nature does not provide any respite either, as these highways are also victims of recurring landslides and avalanches during monsoons and winters. More than 3000 vehicles of all types negotiate the NH-1A and 1B highways daily.
