We are all grieved to learn of passing away of Micky Blake on June 9th, 2012. He was 88 Years old . Micky was a legend in IAF. There is much that needs to be said about Micky, such as his winning the Sword of Honour in his Pilots Course, performance at the PAI and Day Fighter Leader Courses and his leadership qualities. . . .
The Nawanagar Sword of Honour was a gem encrusted invaluable sword that was awarded to the newly commissioned Pilot Officers who stood first in their course at the Air Force Academy. The sword was replaced by the Chief of Air Staff Sword of Honour in the 1990s and it disappeared in the sands of time... till one diligent commandant of the Air Force Academy decided to track it down..
Kartar Singh Saund (IND/1664 was commissioned into the Indian Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1941. He joined No.2 Squadron after training and flew Lysander and Hurricane fighters. He died on the frontline in 1943 at Imphal - His family had preserved his photos for over seventy years - before showcasing them here. A profile of Kartar Singh Saund has also been researched and published along with the album.
During the 1971 War, Sirsa acted as forward air base in Haryana for Squadrons normally operating out of Hindan. It was home to Mystere IVa fighter bombers of Nos 3 and 31 Squadron, as well as a dettachment of MiG-21s of No.29 Squadron. Wg Cdr Divakar Choudhri writes about his days at Sirsa during the war, acting as the Fighter Controller for the aircraft there.
