AERO-INDIA '98

Aero India is India's bi-annual air show held at Yelahanka AFB, near Bangalore. This was the second such show held in India, with the first taking place in '96. The '98 show was held in-between December 8th and 12th. Our fellow 'BR Wala' and well-know cyber-surgeon, Dr. Shivshankar Shastry, had the good fortune to attend the show and take out some impressive pictures.

BHARAT RAKSHAK is extremely grateful to him, for the pictures he took at the air show and I hope that you enjoy these pictures as much as we did. Please click on the images for the big picture.

-

Nine HAL HJT-16s from the IAF's 'Surya Kirans' aerobatics team performing. Alas the sky fails to co-operate.

-

The HAL Hs.748 AEW, lovingly referred to as the 'Flying Chapati' by some of the fellow 'B-R walas'

-

A mock-up of the beautiful looking HJT-36. This aircraft is slated to replace the HJT-16 Kiran. The airframe has obviously evolved, since the first Vayu published line-drawings.

-

Sukhoi pilot, Victor Pugachev, flew demonstrations on this TV-nozzled Su-30MK, which undoubtedly was one of the major attractions of the show. Notice the tail of an Indian Air Force (IAF) Jaguar IM, sticking into the picture.

-

A rather fearsome looking Naval ALH, displaying a variety of un-guided and guided ordnance, such as anti-ship missiles and torpedoes.

-

A Ka-28 Helix-A [IN 582] from the  Indian Navy. The helicopter arrived directly from one of the Navy's Kashin-II Class destroyers, stationed at Mumbai, for Aero India '98!

-

A naval HAL Chetak with lightweight torpedoes.

-

A Tu-142 Bear-F of the Indian Navy.

-

The LCA's Kaveri engine.
