Upon
entering the museum, the visitor starts with going through the indoor galleries adjoining
the main hangars. These galleries have various sections like the Air Chiefs section, the
Roll of Honour section, an Operational and Peace time gallery section, etc.
The
pride of place goes to the pictures of Fg. Off. Nimral Jit Singh Sekhon, PVC (1971
Indo-Pak War) and Wg. Cdr. Rakesh Sharma, AC India's first Cosmonaut.
Other
interesting sections include a captured weapons section with weapons ranging from the
Camel guns used by the Pathans in the 1940s, to American sub machine guns used by SSG
Paratroopers right up to AK-47s surrendered by PAF personnel during the surrender of
Dacca are on display.
An
aircraft model gallery with models of all the aircraft used in IAF service gives the
visitor a perspective of aircraft that are not to be seen in the IAF Museum. Some of the
aircraft like the Dragon Rapide, or the Pussmoth are long extinct in India, hence it would
be possible to represent them only in terms of miniature models.
There
are showcases displaying various uniforms worn on different occasions, along with working
uniforms. On display are various mementoes presented by different delegates to the Air
Chiefs.
An interesting memento to observe is a meticulously constructed brass
model of a Patton tank that was presented by General J.N. Chaudhari to Air Chief Marshal
Arjan Singh.
