The History of Rotary Winged Aircraft in India started in 1954 with the induction of Sikorsky Helicopters in the IAF. No.104 Helicopter Unit was the first to be raised. Since then Helicopters have formed a significant component in the Airlift and attack forces of the IAF.
The Sikorsky S55 was the first ever helicopter operated by the IAF. Less than six examples served with the IAF. Two of which have been given off to the Navy.

Four examples of the Bell 47G-2 helicopter were received by the IAF in early '54 followed by a last batch of six in Aug '62 bringing the total operated to 15. The helicopter was used extensively along side Sikorsky S-55s and Mil MI-4s from Nepal to Ceylon

The first Mi-4 helicopters were inducted in the early 60s just before the India China War. The Mi-4 equipped over six helicopter units and were the mainstay of the medium lift heli force till the induction of the Mi-8 in 1971.
