Jamnagar - The best flying station for 2006

Air Force Station Jamnagar has been adjudged as the 'Best Flying Station' for the year 2006. In a unique competition wherein seven best premier bases of Indian Air Force compete to become the best out of best, Jamnagar Base has been adjudged the numero – uno of IAF. Air Force Station Jamnagar was established in the year 1951 as an Armament Training Wing to facilitate the Armament Training of fighter pilots of Indian Air Force. In the year 1979 it was upgraded to 33 Wing Air Force and has been continuing as a premier fighter base ever since.

The combat aircraft launched from this Air Base, have contributed immensely in inflicting damage at Karachi in Pakistan during 1965 and 1971 Wars and also in liberation of Diu in 1961. Aircraft from this base have also contributed in peace time operation during earthquake in Jan 2001, Tsunami in Dec 2004 and flood-relief at Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

The base is presently commanded by Air Cmde Devinder Singh VM VSM since Jun 2005. Some of the earlier Commanders namely Gp Capt OP Mehra (1958), Gp Capt SK Mehra AVSM VM (1975) rose to the post of the Chief of Air Staff of Indian Air Force. The present Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal SP Tyagi PVSM AVSM VM ADC is also one of those illustrious Commanders who was in command of Air Force Station Jamnagar from Dec 90 to Jun 93.

Chetak Z407 is one of the few helicopters in the IAF equipped with floatation skids. This helicopter takes part in Search and Rescue operations that might be required from Jamnagar air force station.
