Il-76MD K2665 Rohini
K2665 ‘E’ parked at the main apron again but closer to the ATC building. This interesting shot shows the ATC building just behind the IL-76 and also shows the Aircraft hangers for the 106 Squadron to the right of the photograph in the background. Also seen is one Canberra of the same Squadron on its part of the Tarmac and cane be seen just under the rear loading ramp of the IL-76 in this photograph. Notice that the Canberra cockpit is covered with a portable shelter to prevent damage to the cockpit and heating inside it. Also notice that the IL-76 has the name ‘ROHINI’ painted on its side as well as the rear Tail Gunner’s position can be seen with the two guns fitted. This practice was followed from the Soviets who liked to keep all tactical transport aircraft with these guns. Whether they were of any use at any time since the arrival of the IL-76 in India can be gauged by the fact that the gunner inside the aircraft was almost always a helping hand for the regular crew rather than in his position! Further, these guns and the rear Gunner position have been removed in the Upgrade program that is currently underway for the IAF IL-76 fleet.
