The HAL HJT-16 Kiran is a two-seat basic jet trainer built by Hindustan Aeronautics. Used for intermediate training for pilots who had finished basic flying training on the HPT-32 Deepak.

India's indigenous HAL HPT-32 Deepak is used for initial pilot training and other utility tasks. The Deepak was developed by HAL for the IAF to replace the tandem two-seat HT-2 basic trainer and to undertake a range of other utility roles.

The first flight of the HJT-36 was done on 7th March 2003 by Sqn Ldr Baldev Singh (Retd), Chief Test Pilot (Fixed Wing (FW)) of HAL. He took up the IJT on its maiden flight, which lasted for about 20 minutes.
