THE ROYAL INDIAN AIR FORCE IN THE KASHMIR OPERATIONS 1947-48

The General Service Medal 1947-48 with the Jammu and Kashmir Clasp

Introduction

The first test for the Independent  Royal Indian Air Force came within months of August 15.

The Operations of the 47-48 War were unique in the sense that this was the first time Transport aircraft of the IAF saw full time deployment in operations.

Fighter squadrons also gained exposure and experience of operating in mountainous environment.

The Scale of Operations in the war can be assessed by the fact that 32 Officers and Airmen made the ultimate sacrifice in one and a half years of fighting. The IAF was awarded  4 MVCs and 28 VrCs.

This is a 3.4 MB download of a 1948-50 publicity film - The 6min or so duration clip shows shots of a Tempest II being readied for a strike on Skardu and aerial footage of the general target area with FAC chatter and all.  The quality is not so good, but the film clip is rare!
