This was Flt Lt. “Sukhi” Singh’s Tempest. Sukhi was a very nice, fun-loving, humourous guy and a very good pilot. His engine failed over the airfield and he came to land on the left side of the runway on the grassy shoulder with wheels up for a belly landing. SOP was to force land with wheels up on the left or right sides of the runway to minimize damage to the aircraft and for pilot safety.
