| Details : |  Air Commodore Kacheri Madathil Sivarama Menon Pradeep (15818) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as an engineer in the Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) Branch on 02 Jul 79. The officer has held several field and staff appointments during his service career. He has been a Specialist Radar Officer and Senior Technical Officer at various Guided Weapon squadrons, Commanding Officer of Electronics Standards Calibration Team (ESCT) and the Station Commander of a Signals Unit. He has also held staff appointments as Command Signal Officer (Air) at Southern Air Command and Director Radar (Non-ADGES) at Air Headquarters. In recognition of the highly challenging and responsible nature of duties performed by him as part of the Combat crew in Surface-to-Air Guided Weapons (SAGW) Squadron, he has been awarded the coveted SAGW badge. During his tenure as the Commanding Officer of ESCT, he was instrumental in revamping calibration procedures for SAGW test equipment, identification of indigenous substitutes to test equipment to counter their non-availability from OEMs and indigenisation of microwave devices that were resulting in unserviceability’s to test stations. It was during his tenure as the Commanding Officer of a Signals Unit that the first Network Operations Centre cum Data Centre of the IAF was set up. In recognition of his distinguished service and devotion to duty, he was awarded the Commendation by Chief of the Air Staff on 26 Jan 04. Air Cmde KMS Pradeep is presently the Principal Director Guided Weapons Maintenance at Air Headquarters. As part of the modernisation plan of AD weapon assets of IAF, a large number of SAGW systems are under various stages of induction. There is an in-depth involvement of the officer at every stage in each of these projects based on his first hand working experience on erstwhile SAGW systems. This is bound to ensure that the systems under induction would continue to meet the operational requirements of IAF with an appropriately tuned maintenance philosophy for years to come. His proactive approach in reviving the operational potential of the existing ageing GW fleet through overhaul of OSA Combat vehicles, revision of maintenance philosophy of Pechora system so as to conserve their operational life and refurbishment/life extension of Pechora, OSA and IGLA missiles are bound to pay rich dividends in ensuring that optimal op capability of SAGW systems is maintained until induction of new systems. His liaison with High Explosive Materials Research Laboratory for stretching the life of Pechora missiles beyond their extended life would result in 60% additional availability of missiles while refurbishment has been delayed due to production constraints at Ordnance Factory Board. | Details : |  Air Commodore Sunil Jayant Nanodkar VM was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in flying branch on 11 Dec 81. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor with over 3900 hrs of accident free flying. He is an a1umnus of the Defence Services Staff College, the College of Combat and the National Defence College. In his 30 years of distinguished service, he has held several field and staff appointments. These include Flight Commander and Commanding Officer of a Jaguar Squadron, a Directing Staff at two premier institutes of the IAF- the flying Instructors School and the Defence Services Staff College. He was Director Tactical Operations at Air HQ, during this tenure he planned and led the first overseas major Air Force Exercise Co-operative Cope Thunder-04 in Alaska. He has commanded two frontline major air bases of the IAF as a Station Commander and Air Officer Commanding. He is currently the Principal Director Aircraft (Operations Tactical) since 29 Nov 10. His professional expertise, dynamism and inspiring leadership have given the directorate a team that is efficient, motivated and thus highly productive. His initiative, foresight and intelligence has contributed immensely towards the meticulous analysis of the weak areas having direct implication on the overall offensive capability of the IAF. Many issues related to weapons and offensive platforms have been streamlined because of his personal involvement. His persistent endeavour, drive and insistent interaction with various agencies in the IAF, Ordnance Factory Board, DRDO and the academia have resulted in increased availability of weapons and more importantly a clarity in the way forward. Additionally due to his endeavour a comprehensive fuzing policy and weapon assessment criteria review have been done. The directorate has been able to boast of having reviewed all the Standard Operating Procedures as well as the Orders and Instructions related to all the platforms and weapon systems due to his initiative. | Details : |  Group Captain Mysore Ananthapadmanabhasharma Sridhar (17027) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as an air traffic controller in the administrative branch on 29 Dec 82. During his service, he has held important appoints of Senior Air Traffic Control Officer at Air Force Station Agra, Air Force ATC Examiner and Joint Director Air Staff Inspection at Air HQ, Station Information Technology Officer & Senior Instructor (Adm) at Air Force Administrative College and Chief Administrative Officer of a major flying station. He is presently posted as Command Works Officer at Headquarters Training Command since 26 Apr 11. He has successfully completed the 52 Air Staff course at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington in 1997. Gp Capt MA Sridhar is an intelligent, sincere and diligent officer. He has the ability to conceptualize and plan improvements in his sphere of influence. With his experience during inspections, he has shown remarkable application in taking a holistic view of the tasks in identifying the limitations of existing systems. With his dedication, meticulous approach and concerted efforts he has been instrumental in laying the foundation of e-learning process of the Distance Education element for the courses conducted at Air Force Administrative College. During his tenure as the Chief Administrative Officer of Air Force Station Bidar, he has been responsible for the infrastructural development post induction of the Hawk Mk 132 aircraft. Due to his concerted efforts, a 28 aircraft hangar has been approved for the station. Due to his perseverance, he has also been successful in the release of 373 Prefabricated Dwelling Units for airmen married accommodation as a Special Project. Within one year post induction of Hawk aircraft, the revision of policy page for the Station as well as two Hawk Training squadrons and consequently the revised Establishments for these units were approved in 2011. As Command Works Officer, he has streamlined the functioning and introduced innovative methods for faster processing of Works Services. During the year 2011- 12, despite the delays in approval of list, the works services released for Training Command exceeded the designated ceiling. Additionally, planning and execution of Runway Resurfacing (Special Projects) at Bidar and Tambaram were diligently undertaken without disrupting the flying training. Further, the budgetary expenditure by stations under Training Command was very well managed as per the targets. Gp Capt MA Sridhar has demonstrated extraordinary ability to be team leader and produce results with speed and accuracy. Besides setting a personal example, he has an ability to muster unflinching support of his subordinates to form a highly motivated and dynamic team with a purpose to enhance effectiveness. He has displayed a deep sense of responsibility, unflinching devotion to duty and total dedication to the service. His eagerness to anticipate, innovate, and enthuse have been motivational factors for his subordinates. | Details : |  Air Commodore Soumitra Kumar Dey (17030) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in the administrative branch on 29 Dec 82. In his 29 years of distinguished service, he has held many important appointments including Chief Administrative Officer (CAdm 0) of a flying station, Assistant Provost Marshal, Deputy Provost Marshal (Air), SO to the VCAS and JD Works at Air HQ etc. At present the officer is posted as Principal Director Org (Ceremonials) at Air HQ An alumnus of DSSC, Air Cmde SK Dey has been commended by the CAS, AOC-in-C and GOC-in-C. The officer with his strive for excellence and ability to conceptualize out of box solutions has contributed immensely towards organizational objective. Inception of Air Force Dog Training School at 56 ASP as Dy PM (Air), meticulous planning, coordination and timely completion of works services of HQ WAC as JD Works, completion of many projects to improve the quality of life of air warriors as C Adm 0 are indications of his professional acumen. The officer as the leader of the Indian Project Management Team for resurfacing of runway at Jaffna, continued to persist with the pace of work despite severe adverse conditions and artillery attacks on the airfield on regular basis. In his present appointment he has ensured setting up of very high standards for ceremonial events, Air Force Band, Air Warrior Drill Team, Ceremonial Contingent, successful conduct of National, Service and Air Force level ceremonies including six President's standard presentation ceremony in last three years is testimony of his perseverance and indefatigable drive. His foresight, hard work and dedication greatly contributed in Air Force winning the Best Marching Contingent award in RD Parade consecutively for two years in 2011 and 2012, a feat never achieved before by any of the Armed Forces contingents. Cases of appointment of Commodore Commandants, regulating expenditure on ceremonial parades from Public Fund to save welfare fund, work related to new lAF on dresses have been pursued with due diligence and in short despite various constraints. The Air Officer also discharged the additional responsibility of PD Org (Adm) for almost a year, as PD Org (Adm) his main contribution has been towards ensuring 100% modernization of office equipment at all AF Stns/Units, providing vision to the planning and execution of the VRF air conditioning work, upgradation of electrical infrastructure and complete renovation of main foyer at Vayu Bhavan. | Details : |  Gp Capt Neeraj Srivastava (17787) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in logistics branch on 21 Dec 84. He is a mix of a Logistician and an IT professional and has held appointments of Asst Dir (Comp Cat) at Logistics Information System at Air HQ, Systems Manager at 25 EO, Deputy Chief Logistics Officer at 26 EO, Director Management Information System at Air HQ and Senior Logistics Officer ( S Lgs 0 ) at a premier flying station. He has also been on deputation to Govt of Botswana as Air Logistics Advisor to Botswana Defence Force. He has an illustrious career and has always displayed high professional competence during each of his assignments. At 25 EO Devlali he was a key developer of Depot Logistics Management System where he migrated from Mainframe COBOL environment to Unix/Oracle System. During the Y2K crisis his ingenious solution saved the system from becoming nonfunctional, besides saving huge amount of time and resources. He is the creator of AOM Net Web site at Air HQ where he provided Web based access to Logistics Information System data and successfully digitised the voluminous regulations viz lAP 1501, lAP 1542 and Logistics Air Force Orders which are now very widely used in the IAF His performance as S Lgs 0 at AF Stn Adampur was exceptional and he provided an efficient Logistics Support to the operations and users and created self-service clothing store which was later emulated in many stations. As Director Integrated Materials Management Online Systems he undertook the development of now widely used Dashboards and also provided global stock visibility using innovative technique avoiding voluminous replication of data. He also implemented system and code optimisation that resulted in achieving drastic reduction in application response time. He has been awarded CAS Commendation in the years 1997 and 2000 for his distinguished service. Gp Capt Neeraj Srivastava is presently commanding 27 EO. He has undertaken the assigned tasks with great zeal and enthusiasm. During his short stay he has flawlessly handled the commitment of providing trailers for tableaux for RO Parade 2012. He has also achieved good progress in receiving, accounting and distribution of items repatriated from UN Missions. With no clear guidelines available for disbursement of the items, he undertook disbursement by displaying the items on the Web. This resulted in high movement of items and within eight months 60 percent items have been disbursed. Five aircraft loads and 4 container loads were also dispatched for IAF contingent in Raipur. In case of UN repatriated common user and specialist vehicles 76 out of 105 have already been distributed in this short span. He has displayed high degree of commitment and leadership in undertaking and achieving assigned tasks while maintaining high morale of the personnel of the depot. | Details : |  Air Commodore Prashant Mukund Vithalkar, VM (17855) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in the flying branch on 14 Jun 85. During the past 27 years of his distinguished service, he has held several important appointments including Commanding Officer of a Mi-8 helicopter unit, Team Leader of a Helicopter Project Monitoring Team and Station Commander of a frontline flying base. He has over 5300 h of flying to his credit on various helicopters in the lAF He was appointed as Air-Il at HQ Western Air Command on 01 Feb 11. He has ensured achievement of air maintenance task for two consecutive years despite of constraints pertaining to reduced availability of aircraft resources. Due to his proactive approach, the helicopter and transport fleet operations have been accident free. This was made possible by maintaining continuous channel of communication with Commanders in the field and passing on of Aviation Safety advisories on regular basis. Air Cmde Vithalkar has consistently worked towards enhancing operational status of the squadrons! units in the Area of Responsibility (AOR) despite reduced availability of flying effort for training. Special Heli Borne Operations and armament camps were organised by pooling-in of scarce resources in a realistic Air Defence! Attack Helicopter threat environment. The successful participation by the lAF aircraft in the Air Force Day, Republic Day Flypasts has been appreciated by all dignitaries and audience alike. The setting up of helicopter patrol for Delhi Integrated Air Defence Centre (DlADC) during many of the National occasions has contributed towards the Air Defence of national capital. As Air ll, his ability to plan, organise and conduct smooth operations has been on display in many of the bi-annual Command level Exercises and Indian Army Commands Exercise with Troops (EWTs). He has been responsible for induction of C-130 J aircraft (ac) and Mi-17 V5 helicopters in the AOR which involved overseeing readiness of infrastructure for induction as well as training programme for safe and early operationalisation of the new raisings. A close monitoring of projects by him has paved way for future inductions of ac in the. AOR like WIP helicopter and C-17 Globemaster ac. In addition, smooth merger of IL-76 Sqns and operationalisation of IL-78 ac from two different bases in the AOR has been noteworthy. The transport and helicopter assets have been effectively utilised for the move of fighter squadrons, air armament, Air Defence assets as well as maintenance support for operations. A fortnightly maintenance courier services to Base Repair! Equipment Depots have been instituted which shall help in upgrading the serviceability status of all the fleets in the AOR. | Details : |  Group Captain Nrip Kumar Mehta (17886) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in the Administration branch on 14 Jun 85. Gp Capt NK Mehta has been Adjutant, Security Officer and Works Officer at various major operational bases. He has also been Instructor at Air Force Academy and Chief Admin Officer at premier operational Air Force Station. He has the unique distinction of being Command Works Officer to two frontline operational commands. He has been posted as Command Works Officer at HQ South Western Air Command (SWAC) since 14 Nov 2011. He has been commended twice by AOC-in-C in 1993 & 1997 and twice by the CAS in 2000 & 2002. As manager of Air Force Aquatic Team, the only time the team won the overall Services Championship and he represented Services in National Games in 1997. During 27 years’ service Group Captain Mehta has executed works services at five major bases and two of the largest operational commands with far reaching and enabling impact on the operational preparedness and quality of life in IAF Working from grass root levels to conceptual level of compiling lAP 2501, the bible for Works Services and Married Accommodation in the IAF This was mammoth task of combining 13 Air Force Orders and tempering it with practical project management principles with stress on maximising time, quality and cost in works services. Using innovative ways in energy saving, he has substantially saved electricity tariff in a number of bases. He has painstakingly consolidated land records where none existed and evicted encroachments. Keeping in with the pace of expansion of lAF,23 land acquisition cases are progressed with efficient liaison with civil authorities. Synchronising operational infrastructure with new induction in his forte without neglecting married accommodation, messes, billets, sports and medical infrastructure. At a premier air force base, he successfully inducted a frontline transport aircraft and conducted two Air Force Parades in 2010 & 2011. As Command Works Officer at HQ SWAC, Gp Capt NK Mehta is constantly in touch with the field units and Military Engineering Services to ensure meticulous planning, expeditious processing, efficient execution, close supervision and timely maintenance. Works Services worth Rs. 280 crores have been released and Rs. 600 crores is ongoing towards expeditious completion. His proactive approach backed by deep knowledge of works procedures has ensured no delays in induction of new weapon systems and timely completion of Runway Resurfacing. He is instrumental in completion of major projects of Chiloda and Phalodi with quality and cost consciousness. In the years to come, the operational and infrastructural robustness of SWAC would bear testimony to the meticulous planning, astute fund management and efficient project management of Gp Capt NK Mehta. | Details : |  Air Commodore Savinder Pal Singh (18116) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in flying branch on 06 Dec 85. He has commanded a fighter squadron and has served as Chief Operational Officer of two premier fighter bases of Western Air Command. During all these tenures, there were no incidents! accidents. He has also functioned as Director Strategic Intelligence in Strategic Force Command. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor, Fighter Combat Leader and Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner. He is an alumnus of Defence Services Staff College. He has undergone Higher Command Course at MHOW, where he was awarded the Commander's medal for research work on nuclear capabilities in the region. He has attained first division in both MPhil and MSc (Defence studies) degrees. He has been commended twice by the Chief of Air Staff and awarded three stars of flight safety. In his previous appointment as Commanding Officer, of one of the Tactical Air Centre (TAC), he earned the admiration from commanders at all levels of South Western Command (Army), for his initiative in conducting training seminars and joint operational exercises up to Brigade level in the concerned Corps zone. The unit also conducted the highest number of Counter Surface Force missions in Exercise Gauntlet- III and IV Under his leadership, the unit was adjudged as the 'Best TAC' for the year 2011. He is presently Air Officer Commanding of a frontline Air Force base since 04 Jul 11. During his command he has made number of value additions in the base on all fronts. The base has always performed exceptionally well in all exercises including Gauntlet V and VI. Under his guidance, the base undertook seamless induction and sustained operations of Remotely Piloted Aircraft unit for five months that culminated in their successful operational employment in Ex-Gauntlet VI. He, with his extraordinary acumen, clarity of thought and perseverance, was able to get the work services for initial induction of Su-30 released in the record shortest possible time. Professionalism with involvement and commitment has been the core values with which he has completed every task assigned to him. He not only focussed on operational orientation but also ensured welfare and created opportunities for overall development of his subordinates and their families, with special emphasis on education for children. He, with his extraordinary leadership qualities and compassion has created a highly motivated team which is regarded with professional admiration in Western Air Command. | Details : |  Group Captain Sadhana Saxena Nair (18197) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in the medical branch on 03 Dec 85. The officer has been Senior Medical Officer (SMO) of three different stations including AF Sin Pune. In all her tenures the officer has distinguished herself with her professionalism and commitment to task. The officer was commended by AOC·in·C, WAC in 2001 whilst she was SMO at Air Force Station Arjangarh and by CAS in 2006 while serving as SMO, 13 Base Repair Depot. The SMCs that she headed have been adjudged 'Best SMC' of Command on several occasions. All through her service, she has placed a premium on staying updated with the latest in her profession. Towards this, she completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Maternal & Child Health in 2001 and a two year course in Medical Informatics from AIIMS, New Delhi in 2008. She has authored two studies, one on 'Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity in School Going Children in an Air Force Camp in New Delhi' in 2005 and the other on 'Response of Patients and OPD Registration Staff of a Multispecialty Government Hospital to computerisation of OPD Registration' in 2007. The officer also submitted a project on 'Software Requirement Specifications for Computerisation of Station Medicare Centres of the IAF' to Air HQ in 2008. On assuming charge as Deputy Principal Medical Officer (DPMO) in Mar 10, the officer leveraged her considerable experience and newly acquired computer skills to improve efficiency at Command level bringing about significant improvements in spheres such as Patient Care, Local Purchase Procedures and Medical Boards. The officer single handedly designed and developed the Southern Air Command (SAC) Medical Web Site which contains the latest and extremely useful information for all the medical officers in the periphery. She has excelled on the professional front too. Despite having no hospital under this command, she organised a Continuing Medical Education seminar on 'Medicare in Field Units' at HQ SAC - the first of its kind since the inception of SAC. Camps for 'Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening and Awareness', 'Bone Density Screening and Awareness' and Diabetic Biothesiometry Screening and Awareness' were organised by her during her present appointment and received excellent response. In keeping with the operational role of Southern Air Command, she organised a seminar on 'Aeromedical Aspects of Maritime Air Ops and Long duration fighter flying· another first of its kind. The seminar won all round accolades. The officer shouldered additional responsibility of being an executive committee member of AFWWA (R) at HQ SAC and has displayed commendable work towards smooth conduct of welfare activities without at any stage compromising performance of her primary duty. | Details : |  Group Captain Vijay Kumar Garg (18493) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as an engineer in the Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical) branch on 19 Aug 86, He has been on the posted strength of the Directorate of Engineering Transport (Western) since 30 May 11 and has been functioning as the Director. Gp Capt VK Garg has professional approach and positive attitude and has experience on various fleets viz Jaguar, IL-76 and C-130, He excelled as a Cat 'Pi Flight Engineer on IL-76 aircraft and was instrumental in finalisation of a number of SOPs for operations from high altitude and short runways, As the Commanding Officer of No 2 Balloon Barrage Unit, he ensured effective deployment of unit during 'Op Safed Sagar' on a forward base, During his tenure at one of the fighter air base, the officer single handedly and successfully extended maintenance support to two Jaguar squadrons deployed at their Op locations during 'Op Parakram'. Gp Capt Garg was also responsible for successful implementation of 'Just in Time Training' concept while posted at Directorate of Training at Air HQ. Gp Capt VK Garg was the Chief Engineering Officer of Air Force Station, Yelahanka, a premier flying training establishment. He successfully steered the limited resources at his disposal, to ensure time bound completion of enhanced training task, amounting to annual flying task of approximately 20000 hours on five different types of aircraft and helicopters, as well as all maintenance requirements during Aero India -2011. He has a wide and varied experience on fighter, helicopter and transport aircraft systems ranging from first to fourth line servicing and is also a Cat '1 qualified Flight Engineer on IL-76 MD aircraft with instructor qualification. In his current role within a year, he has addressed several design and reliability issues plaguing Su-30 MKl aircraft effectively with manufacturer through in-depth studies. This has also given him a vast exposure on continued air-worthiness of aero-engine and certification. As Squadron Commander of Aircraft Tech Squadron of three MiG-23 BN squadrons at a forward air base, he ensured highest serviceability in Western Air Command during 'Op Parakram' and also in subsequent years. During his 26 years of service, he was commended twice by CAS and once by AOC-in-C, HQ TC for his laudable all-round performance, pro-active roles and innovative ideas. At 11 BRD, he has carried out a large number of structural modifications and aircraft recovery through innovative and RCMA approved repair schemes on MiG-23 aircraft. Now, at RCMA Koraput, he has conducted extensive aeroengine recovery studies and is deeply involved in lifing studies in liaison with various DRDO agencies. Noteworthy, among these achievements are recovery of a MiG-23 UB MS 315 declared Cat 'E' by RCMA (Nasik) through a newly developed metal-composite patch repair scheme with NAL, Bangalore and recovery of Low Pressure Spools declared Cat 'E' by Mls UMPO, Russia of two AL31 FP aero-engines with DMRL, Hyderabad. Both these efforts paved way for new in-house technology development in military aviation sector and has led to huge foreign exchange savings of Rs 17 crores. He has also ably contributed at HQ Training Command in addressing problem areas in HPT-32 aircraft and the initial technical design deficiencies of Hawk Mk 132 aircraft with HAL and British Aerospace. He is trained abroad in United States Air Force on all NDI techniques in 2006-07 and has also presented Hawk Mk 132 related environmental design issues during Hawk User Group conference at Muscat, Oman in 2009. The setting up of MiG-29 series upgrade line at the depot has been delayed by more than two years. To overcome these constraints the Production Division has carried out numerous life extension studies, indigenisation of spares, refurbishment of aggregates etc. The entire 1986 batch of MiG-29 ac comprising 30 ac would have been grounded but for timely completion of life extension on Ejection Seats and Landing Gears. These studies along with indigenisation of ejection seat spares have resulted in savings of foreign exchange in excess of rupees 200 crores. The focused approach to sustain production of ac and aggregates has helped both operating bases to maintain highest levels of serviceability in the IAF, even reaching 100% on more than two occasions in the past two years. His significant achievements include the case for procurement of the urgently required Basic Trainer Aircraft. The case was progressed in an extremely methodical, professional and efficient manner resulting in the successful culmination of the first contract based on Life Cycle Costing model. He was also responsible for finalising the case for procurement of C-17 aircraft following the Foreign Military Sale procedures. The officer with his ingenuity and foresight offered solutions for complex issues which were easily accepted by both officials of Ministry of Defence and officials of the Government of United States of America enabling expeditious completion of the contract. As CO, 41 R&SU, in Dec 2009 he has conceived and formulated a temporary structural repair scheme for recovery of a crash landed Mi-17 1V heptr 2-3352 at Chungtash helipad that helped in retrieval of the heptr by a joint team of R&SU and Mi-17 trained personnel. The recovery of the heptr was significant due to extensive damage to main frames as nose landing gear had pierced into cockpit and distortion of tail boom skin. The officer took keen initiative in studying various Battle Damage Repair schemes of HAL and cut open various structural elements on a Cat 'E' Mi-8 heptr at No. 3 BRD and formulated a viable and safe structural repair scheme. During his tenure in R & SU, he has also conceived a repair scheme for recovery of lL-76 ac that sustained extensive damage to all leading edges of aerodynamic surfaces and nose radome in May 2010 as the ac entered into bad weather while returning from Leh. The officer has done his M Tech at IIT Mumbai and Air Staff Course at DSSC, Wellington. In his appointment as Senior Air Traffic Control Officer (SATCO) of a strategic base, runway maintenance was a challenging task due to its vintage. With operational orientation and close interaction with Military Engineering Services, he exploited laid down policies to use innovative maintenance practices ensuring runway availability for uninterrupted day/ night regular IAF operations as well as prestigious international and national exercises like 'Indradhanush', 'Akraman' etc. The officer conceptualised and designed an instrument approach procedure simulator along with a software expert, and has been a driving force in procurement of 41 abridged radar simulators, thus fulfilling a long pending requirement of additional training aids for Air Traffic Control Officers. This has resulted in overall improvement in standards of controlling and also saved few lakhs of rupees to the exchequer for software development. In 2007, Indian Air Force embarked on an ambitious turnkey project of Modernisation of Airfield Infrastructure (MAFI) at 30 bases to upgrade its op capability to include 24x7 all weather operations. The officer was appointed as the secretary of Project Management Group in the Rs. 1200 crore phase-I of the project. During contract negotiations, he was responsible for inclusion of certain equipment not in the scope of project such as inset approach lights in the over run area. The inclusion not only enhanced op capability by rendering the overrun area usable by flight refuelling aircraft, but also benefitted the organization by at least Rs. 15 crore. He has been the main driving force behind the project, optimizing and maximizing each facility and thereby, deriving the maximum benefit for the expenditure incurred by the state. His unflinching commitment and proactive handling of the technically intensive project is praiseworthy. | Details : |  Group Captain Pradip Kumar Routa (20565) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as an engineer in the Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) branch on 05 Mar 89. He has held various appointments like Senior Engineer in three helicopter units and UN Mission in Congo, Production Engineer at a helicopter overhaul depot and Joint Director of Inspection at Air HQ. The officer developed Russian testers of Mi-8 helicopter to enhance quality of servicing. He was cash awarded by The President of India. Russian helicopters had emergency landings for spurious fire warnings in the cockpit. He designed antispurious circuit, which was subsequently modified into all Mi-17 helicopters of IAF. Non availability of long endurance oxygen system in helicopters restricted flying mission in Siachen sector. He designed and developed an integrated high/low pressure oxygen system which was subsequently developed by Russians. Infrastructure for the only self sustained first Indian contingent at UN Mission Congo was set up by the officer in inhospitable weather conditions. Gp Capt Pradip Kumar Routa is a graduate from Air Force Technical College, Bangalore and post graduate in engineering from TIT, Patiala. The officer is trained on all Mi series helicopters in India and engine overhaul at MotoSich (Ukraine). He was commended by the Chief of Air Staff in 1993. Reliability of MT vehicles was a point of concern at the largest transit base, Guwahati. Segregation of vehicles based on type specific, independent team to take care, centralised preventive maintenance planning and roadworthiness certification was implemented by the officer. This improved the reliability. Poor quality of compressed gas has resulted in an aircraft incident. The officer created a test lab of its kind to ensure high quality. Induction of Dornier aircraft to station resulted large dependency on HAL. The officer created maintenance set up/ test labs and achieved very high serviceability. With personal involvement and expertise, he ensured nil servicing errors and managed incidents/accidents free flying. The contribution of the officer in providing helicopters for earth quake relief operation at Manipur was noteworthy. | Details : |  Group Captain Ichettira Iyappa Kuttappa (20758) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in the flying branch on 16 Jun 90. He is on the posted strength of Directorate of Intelligence since 09 Aug 10. He has approx. 1800 hrs of flying to his credit. He has been commended by AOC-in-C for devotion to duty and contribution to flight safety in Aug 1990 and by CISC for his valued contribution as an instructor of the prestigious DSSC in Jan 2008. Additionally, he is recipient of Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) in Jan 2002. In 1990, he safely recovered an Iskara aircraft after experiencing a total electric failure, despite his limited experience as ab-initio pilot and displayed utmost professionalism. In 2002, he carried out an unprecedented safe recovery of a MiG-21 Type 75 aircraft in an emergency which required skillful handling of the situation. He stayed calm and composed and displayed a sharp acumen in an adverse situation to bring the aircraft back safely. His outstanding leadership and selfless work was again tested during the Bhuj earthquake. His work in providing relief set an example for others to emulate. During his tenure as Directing Staff at DSSC, he was appreciated at all levels for inculcating synergy among students from all three services. An avid reader and a keen thinker, his background of having done Staff course in Germany provided him with the tools to make valuable contribution as a member of Training Team. In his current assignment as Director Operational Intelligence, he has led from the front. Despite intelligence being an entirely new field for him, he has quickly adapted to the nuances of collation, analysis and timely dissemination of intelligence and has brought about remarkable qualitative improvement in the functioning of his staff. His enthusiasm at work percolates down to his team and is displayed in the form of improved Monthly Intelligence Summary, new SIRs being issued, making new folders for easy access to information and enhanced interaction with other intelligence agencies. He has been instrumental in tapping and nurturing new sources for Air Force specific intelligence which have paid rich dividends. His contribution to analysis has led to assessment of Concept of Operations of our potential adversaries. His work has been appreciated at all levels. | Details : |  Group Captain Gorantla Kasi Jalandhar Reddy (20990) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in flying branch on 15 Dec 90. In his 21 years of service, he has held several important appointments including Flight Commander of a MiG-29 squadron and Flight Commander at Flying Instructors' School. He has also to his credit the distinction of forming a new squadron of the Advance Jet Trainer (AJT) Hawk aircraft and become its first Chief Flying Instructor (CFI). An alumni of Defence Services Staff College and a Category '(1; Qualified Flying Instructor, he has over 4500 hours of accident free flying. As the pioneer CFI of a Hawk squadron, he was instrumental in meticulously planning, formulating and conducting Semester - 2 training of Stage-Ill fighter pilots on the newly inducted Hawk aircraft. Under his proactive leadership, the squadron flew over 8000 hours. This entailed providing a high level of dynamism and motivation to all squadron personnel. It was due to his personal involvement that 'Flying Training Pattern' of the Hawk Operational Training Squadron was formulated and which has now become the model for all flying squadrons of the IAF The consistently high standards maintained by the squadron have been appreciated by both Aircrew Examining Board and Directorate of Air Staff Inspection teams. In addition, he was involved in the creation of state of the art infrastructure at Bidar that is conducive to the hi-tech flying training on the AJT. This is now being emulated by other squadrons of the IAF In his present appointment as Senior Flying Training Officer, he is currently instrumental in planning and implementation of all Hawk training curriculum of Stage-Ill (Fighter). With his keen initiative, he explored the local resources and indigenised the Video Debrief System of Hawk ac at just over 1% of the total cost quoted by the OEM. His brilliant foresight, planning and problem solving capabilities have resulted in the smooth progress of training of Hawk aircraft, despite numerous resources constraints. | Details : |  Group Captain Vikram Gaur (21008) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in the flying branch on 15 Dec 90. A graduate of the National Defence Academy, the officer has over 3200 hrs of total service flying and holds the distinction of being fully ops on four different types of fighter aircraft. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor (QH) and Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner (IRlE) who is also cleared for Low Level Aerobatics on Su-30MKI aircraft. An alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, he has held many important Command and Staff appointments including 'Commanding Officer of a frontline Su-30 MKI squadron and Joint Director Personnel Officers at Air HQ (VB). The officer was awarded commendation by Chief of the Air Staff in 2003. The officer has taken part in 'Op Safed Sagar'. He is presently the Ops 1B and Leader of the Command Air Tasking and Strike Planning for Aerial Warfare (CATSPAW) at Headquarters Western Air Command. Group Captain Vikram Gaur commanded a Su-30 MKI fighter squadron in 2008-10, during which period the squadron was made into the first type training Su-30 MKI squadron. During this period the squadron achieved highest training and operational standards and passed out more than hundred aircrew with impeccable flight safety record. Under his able command, the squadron undertook the herculean task of formulating the SOPS, conducted the first Weapons Camp and field tested the entire spectrum of Air to Ground Weaponry of the Su-30 MKI aircraft for the first time in the IAF The officer was appointed as CATSPAW Leader in Head Quarter Western Air Command in Mar 2011. During his tenure, a Table-Top Exercise: Indian Checkers, was conceptualised, planned and conducted for the first time in HQ WAC. As CATSPAW Leader, the officer efficiently planned and conducted the Gauntlet-V and Gauntlet-VI Exercises. He displayed an outstanding grasp of the intricate task of modern aerial warfare planning, essential for Command Air Ops. As Ops 1B, he has ensured an all-encompassing quantum improvement in the overall Op preparedness of the Command forces by synergising meaningful routine training with realistic implementation and thus developed combat potential during Command Level exercises. His focused effort has resulted in closer liaison with the three affiliated Army Commands, improved targeting philosophy and synergising the Air Land War concept in this Command, which was effectively displayed during numerous Army exercises. A Command Air tasking Tool- 'Air Operations System' and its integration with Integrated Command Air Tasking System (ICATS) was actively pursued by him to fruition. His unconditional involvement, devotion to duty, leadership qualities and the highest norms of interpersonal relations has ensured a positive and professional work environment. | Details : |  Wing Commander Updesh Sharma (21653) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in the Accounts branch on 14 Dec 9l. He is serving as the Member, Air Force Pay Implementation Cell (AFPIC). His ability to carry out in depth analysis with clarity of thought enabled the organisation to employ him on identifying 5th CPC anomalies while having rendered only six years of service. His active participation and contribution and skillful handling of the issues enabled IAF to resolve satisfactorily majority of the anomalies. The officer despite being junior in service, as Senior Accountant Officer and Senior Administrative Officer of two Air Force Stations, displayed exceptional leadership qualities to provide best admin support to the unit thereby keeping moral of personnel high at remote and isolated locations. The officer while posted to Naval Plans was involved in the perspective planning of Navy. A task for which he was recognised and commended by the Navy. The enormous knowledge and experience gained by the Officer during his previous tenure enabled the Air Force Pay Commission Cell (AFPCC) to formulate rational proposal on Pay, Pension, Allowances and Condition of services, which passed muster with other two services for consideration of 6th CPC in a time bound manner. His hard work and rational application of rules and regulations has contributed immensely in achieving the goals of AFPCC. The vexing issues of parity and level playing field with civilians were analysed by him. A major share of credit for achieving some important goals like higher Military Service Pay and MACP for Personnel Below Officer Rank, PBA to Wing Commanders does go to him. His advice is keenly sought by the other two Services, DIPAC/PPOC forums, because of his vast experience and expertise. The officer with his professional acumen ensured that no recoveries were affected from the pay of AVM and above. With his extraordinary inter-personal skills, Wg Cdr Updesh Sharma has developed an excellent rapport with the officials of Ministry of Defence, which helped immensely in issues of various Government orders without delay. The positive attitude in execution of his duties, humane and fair relationship with colleagues and subordinates is worth emulating. The officer's capacity to undertake sustained research and produce quality analysis speaks volume of his calibre and professionalism. He has held various appointments as Technical Right Commander, Senior Engineering Officer of a Wing, Production Engineer at Base Repair Depot and an Instructor at Technical Type Training School. He is trained on MiG-23 BN and MiG-27 aircraft apart from training on Electronic Warfare systems. He is also trained on state-of-art avionic systems fitted on MiG-27 upgrade and overhaul of MiG-29 rotables. The officer has impeccable credentials on MiG-23/27 fleet since 1998. He has achieved extraordinary productivity and quality in various maintenance set-ups. By virtue of his training abroad on upgraded systems the officer was specially chosen to work as Technical Right Commander of MiG-27 upgrade(UPG) aircraft. He planned and executed build-up of seven MiG-27 ML prolonged aircraft on ground in record time. His analytical mind, undaunted efforts and perseverance not only helped in identifying critical issues affecting the reliability and maintain ability of MiG-27 UPG aircraft but also resulted in resolving them through repeated discussions with design agencies and suggesting remedial measures. By virtue of his knowledge, he redeemed himself as a single point contact on all MiG-27 UPG related issues and has been a key member of core group involving agencies like Defence Avionics Research Establishment, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). He has also been instrumental in setting up of various test facilities related to MiG 27 UPG avionics. The officer over the last ten years has contributed exceptionally to the Organisation through his steadfast perseverance, devotion to profession, sincerity of purpose and quest for professional excellence. His contribution towards skill enhancement of young air warriors has been commendable and worth emulating by one and all. Being a 'Senior Engineer (Aircraft), of an Air Force Station dealing with more than one hundred aircraft of six different fleets, he has proved his mettle and excelled in each and every area. | Details : |  Wing Commander Paramjeet Singh (21929) was commissioned in Indian Air Force in Administration/ Fighter Controller branch on 10 Jun 92. He is on the posted strength of one of the Pill Force Movement Liaison Unit (AFMLU) since 06 Apr 09 as Commanding Officer. Wg Cdr Paramjeet Singh, as a young fighter controller bagged his first AOC-in-C commendation by building a helipad at 260 SU and contributed towards the unit securing 'Best Air Defence' unit title in 2000. In 2006 as CO of a sensitive, isolated and Cl affected mobile radar unit in the Northern Sector, he altered the temporary setup to a permanent setup. He was instrumental in acquiring of defence land from Govt of J&K and creation of a 1.7 Km long road from the radar location to the highway for ensuring logistics support to the earlier estranged radar location. During this tenure he voluntarily took over as Dett Cdr of an lAF adopted village 'Ursa' during earthquake and was commended by the CAS. In 2008 at newly established Joint Control and Analysis Centre (JCAC) within AAI complex, his efforts resulted in acquiring additional space for this new unit collocated with a civilian organisation. He made sure that all auxiliary ops systems were incorporated with AAI and put into use, including complete air-conditioning of the unit setup. His efforts were once again commended by the CAS. In 2009 he took over as CO of a AFMLU, a highly operational and sensitive unit. He extraordinarily changed the setup of this former diminutive setup within the AAI complex. In addition to acquiring the added space, complete restructuring of the available plinth by creating perpendicular double-tier mezzanine floor, setting up of customised furniture with latest workstations and modular bunk beds to provide for a better quality of working environment in 24 x 7 ops. He ensured installation of systems like IACCS, VCCS, FPDS, TADIDS, Raytheon Radar Picture and their display on LCD screens in the ops room for the greatest situational awareness of the ops crew. For his exceptional contribution towards the unit improvements, he was once again commended by the CAS. The ops room and liaison of the unit were declared 'Exceptional' during Dte of Air Staff Inspection visit in 2011. His innovative and self-initiative attitude led to the setting up of Airport Facilitation Cell (AFC), lAF Publicity Pavilion and space for mounting of two fighter aircraft (MiG-23 BN) at Terminal-3 in IGI Airport. This cell has been recently been inaugurated by the CAS. The AFC is presently serving all defence personnel and their families transiting through IGI Airport. The other publicity projects are aimed at inspiring and attracting the younger generation to join IAF. His persistent efforts bagged a space for these three projects 'free of cost' from Mls GMR Ltd, making a total savings for the IAF to the tune of approximately Rs. two crores per annum on a permanent basis. | Details : |  Group Captain Ajay Kumar Singh (21985) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a navigator in the flying branch on 13 Jun 92. He has been in command of Pechora Missile Squadron since 05 Jul10. He is a Cat 'A officer and is a qualified Senior Sector Controller. His vast experience in Air Defence operations include important milestones like Command Examiner, Air Force Examiner, Directing Staff in Exercise Akraman and Instructor in Guided Weapon Training Institute. He holds the distinction of supervising live firings of Pechora, OSA-AK-M and IGlJ missiles and inspecting these systems in the capacity of Joint Director Air Staff Inspection. A case study of projecting SRE radar picture in Base Operations Control Centre was carried out by the officer which was later implemented throughout the Air Force. On assuming command of the squadron, he set about enhancing operational preparedness and combat potential of the squadron. Through his zeal and sustained hard work, he ensured that the squadron achieved highest ever upgradation in category state in any given year. The officer also took on the mantle of improving the combat potential of the combatants of South Western Air Command by conducting pre-cat board training capsule of Pechora, OSA-AK-M and IGLA operations and Terminal Weapon Control Center seminar for Base Air Defence Officer and BMC. The officer was specially co-opted for Command Air Staff Inspection and Dte of Air Staff Inspection in Western Air Command. A service paper written by the officer on optimum utilisation of specialist vehicles is under consideration and will eventually result in huge saving to the exchanger. In Nov 11, his squadron was detailed as Range Duty Squadron for undertaking live firing of Pechora Missiles for the year 2011-12. His foresight and meticulous operational planning ensured that squadron mobilized with about 90 vehicles and trailers, fired the allotted missiles and returned back in March this year without any accident / incident. The squadron under his leadership pushed the performance envelope to achieve a record success rate and serviceability state with no failure being attributed to the vintage equipment. His dynamic leadership and ingenuity ensured radar antenna being brought by train for the first time ever thus saving substantial amount for the exchequer. Henceforth this would become a template and save about Rs. 30 lakhs every alternate year. The officer's dedication towards the fleet and initiative resulted in live streaming of the Pechora firing for the first time to the entire IAF He has also taken on the mantle of archiving the fleet history for the first time in the form of a movie and coffee table book. His sustained efforts have received praise and adulation from higher echelons.
