Details : During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, Flt Lt Hemant Sharat Kumar Sardesai was serving with a fighter squadron in the Eastern Sector. From 03 to 16 December, he flew 11 sorties of an offensive nature. In one of the missions, he was responsible for locating and later directing an attack on camouflaged enemy headquarter bunkers between Rajinderganj and Mahenderganj, which resulted in the capture of the enemy headquarter and about 160 enemy personnel. On 06 December, he was in first bomb strike mission of the squadron over Tezgaon airfield rendering it inoperative. On the night of 12 December, he attacked a ghost airfield at Narsingdi and followed the attack by day bombing and rendered the airfield unusable. He was in the formation that struck a vital military target in Dacca on 14 December. He was also in the first formation that struck enemy troop concentrations in Dacca, which accelerated the surrender of the Pakistani forces in Bangladesh.

Details : During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, Flt Lt Dinesh Chander Nayyar was servicing with fighter-bomber squadron in the Eastern Sector. He flew 11 missions during the conflict. On his counter air mission over Dacca airfield, he was shot at by enemy anti-aircraft guns. Regardless of personal safety and in the face of heavy ground fire, he pressed home his attack, which resulted in the silencing of the guns on the airfield and destruction of a Sabre aircraft on the ground. In one of his subsequent missions, he located a camouflaged oil dump and destroyed it.

When the formation was attacked by F-86 Sabre aircraft, he engaged one of them and shot it down.

Details :On 04 December 1971, Flt Lt Andre Rudolph Da Costa flew an offensive sortie in Lal Munirhat in the Rangpur Sector. After successfully strafing Army targets, he attacked a goods train south of Lal Munirhat bridge when he was hit. Although he tried to bring his aircraft back, it crashed and he was killed.

Details :On 04 December, Flt Lt Vinod Kumar Neb was No. 3 of a formation of four aircraft on a mission to strike the airfield of Kormitola in the Dacca complex. While the formation was near the target it was intercepted by three Sabres. Flt Lt Neb engaged an enemy aircraft and shot it down. Thereafter, he saw another Sabre and although he was low on fuel, he started manoeuvring his aircraft for a vantage position to engage the enemy aircraft. Meanwhile, the fuel warning light on the aircraft came on and his leader also ordered him to disengage in view of the limited fuel. He brought the aircraft safely to base in spite of engine trouble. Subsequently, he flew a number of ground strike missions in the Commilla Sector. Along with his leader, he was responsible for destroying enemy bunkers and gun positions on the hillocks over-looking Indian troops in Barkal, which enabled its capture by Indian troops.

Details : During the operations against Pakistan in December, 1971, Flight Lieutenant PUSHP KUMAR VAID was serving with a helicopter unit deployed in the Eastern Sector. On one ocassion it was decided to transport an infantry element to the sector by air. Flight Lieutenant Pushp Kumar Vaid, knowing fully well that the helicopter landing area would not be adequately lit and that he would come under heavy enemy fire on landing, volunteered to undertake this mission, and successfully completed the task. Subsequently, he flew 34 more hazarduous missions deep behind the enemy lines. Throughout, Flight Lieutenant Pushp Kumar Vaid displayed gallantry, professional skill and devotion to duty of high order.

Details : During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, Flt Lt Chandra Mohan Singla served with a helicopter unit in the Eastern Sector. On the night of 07 December, he flew an armed helicopter and gave cover to a special heliborne operation at Sylhet. During this mission, the enemy directed intense ground fire on him and his helicopter was hit in eight places. He still kept up the mission and gave air cover for 4.5 hours and fired 35 rockets at ground targets with exceptional accuracy. Thereafter, he continued to operate on such hazardous missions every night till 12 December at various places in enemy territory and deep behind enemy lines.

Details : During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, Flt Lt Manbir Singh served with an operational squadron in the Eastern Sector. He flew 20 sorties in counter air and offensive support missions over Bangladesh. He engaged enemy aircraft successfully forcing them to break off their attacks on the main formation. He executed bombing missions against a variety of targets. These targets were protected by guns of varying calibre, and on more than one occasion his aircraft was hit by ground fire.

Details : During the Indo-Pak war in December 1971, Sqn Ldr Ghanshyam Singh Thapa served with a bomber squadron. He was the lead navigator of a formation of four bombers that carried out the first bombing attack deep into enemy territory on the well defended Pakistan Air Force base at Masroor. He navigated the aircraft to the target despite heavy ground fire and dropped all the bombs with pinpoint precision, causing heavy damage. In this action, Sqn Ldr Ghanshyam Singh Thapa displayed gallantry, professional skill and leadership of a high order.

Details : During the operation against Pakistani December 1971, Sqn Ldr Sanjay Kumar Choudhury served in the Eastern Sector. On the night of 07 December, a special heliborne operation was undertaken for landing a battalion at Sylhet, which was at all times under enemy occupation. Sqn Ldr Choudhury landed with the first wave of troops to personally supervise the lighting of flares to guide subsequent landings. During the process, the helicopter landing area came under heavy enemy gunfire. Regardless of his safety, he with the help of one Jawan, made efforts to light up the landing zone. Shortly thereafter, the Jawan was killed by enemy fire. Undeterred Sqn Ldr Choudhury carried out the task single-handed and kept up the flares the whole night. This enabled the heliborne operation to continue the whole night and ensured its successful completion.

Details :During the operations against Pakistan in December, 1971, Squadron Leader Jagbir Singh was a senior pilot of a fighter bomber Squadron. On the 6th December, 1971, he carried out a tactical reconnaissance mission deep behind the enemy lines in Longewala area and brought back exhaustive information of vital importance which altered the course of battle in the area to our advantage. Later, on the same day he destroyed a tank and a large number of support vehicles in the area. Again, on the 9th December, 1971, after carrying out another very useful tactical reconnaissance, he attacked and destroyed four tanks despite heavy ground fire. His mission contributed significantly in neutralising the enemy thrust in the area. Throughout, Squadron Leader Jagbir Singh displayed gallantry, determination and professional skill of a high order.

Details : During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, Sqn Ldr Charanjit Singh Sandhu was in command of a helicopter unit. On 07 December, he personally led a special heliborne operation deep behind the enemy position in the Eastern Sector. During the first mission his force came under enemy fire but he successfully carried out the landing of his force. The same night, he flew an additional five similar missions. During the operations, he led a total of 34 such hazardous missions. Throughout, Squadron Leader Charanjit Singh Sandhu displayed gallantry, professional skill and devotion to duty of high order.

Details :During the conflict with Pakistan in December 1971, Sqn Ldr Ramesh Chander Sachdeva served with a fighter-bomber squadron. On 04 December, he carried out attacks against very heavily defended targets at Chittagong and later destroyed seven trains, carrying vital supplies to the Pakistani forward positions at Laksham. He flew 15 operational sorties in six days and destroyed a number of ships, tanks, gun positions, bunkers, trains and fuel tanks in the face of heavy ground fire. He landed back with serious bullet holes in the aircraft on two occasions. On 10 December while carrying out a sortie, his engine flamed out after an attack on an enemy boat and his aircraft crashed killing him.

Details : During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, as Flight Commander of fighter-bomber squadron [No.7 Squadron, Hunters), Sqn Ldr Allan David Alley flew 15 operational missions in close support to our ground forces, interdiction and offensive strikes. Between 04 to 06 December, he led strike missions in the Eastern Sector in Saidpur area and destroyed three streamers and four trains. He also extensively damaged three marshalling yards and destroyed four bridges and four enemy bunkers. In the Western Sector, he flew as a deputy leader in a strike mission over Sialkot and Wazirabad marshalling yards. In spite of heavy enemy ground fire, he caused serious damage to the marshalling yards.

Details :During the operations against Pakistan in December 1971, Sqn Ldr Suresh Damodar Karnik served as flight commander of a bomber squadron. He flew six very important and difficult missions, by day as well as by night, in the Western and Eastern Sectors. These missions involved day and night bombing raids over enemy airfields and interdiction of enemy boats by day. The interdiction missions were flown against a large volume of flak, resulting in damage to his aircraft by enemy fire. Despite this, he pressed home his attacks and destroyed a number of enemy boats. He also carried out a day bombing raid over Chittagong airfield in the face of heavy antiaircraft fire. During this mission, he bombed and destroyed a large oil dump.
