Details : | Wing Commander Devam Vats (25631) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a pilot in the helicopter stream on 19 Jun 99. He has held important appointments and presently is the Flight Commander of a Mi-17VS unit. He is a Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) and a Unit Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner (IRIE). He has over 3800 hrs of accident / incident free flying to his credit. He has been commended by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, SWAC and Commander-in-Chief, Andaman & Nicobar Command for his operational achievements. In his distinguished flying career, he has flown a variety of helicopters in the IAF inventory and has participated in various humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions. He has undertaken HADR missions in the Sikkim earthquake relief ops in 2011 and flood relief missions in Assam in 2012 and Gujarat in 2003. In the aftermath of the Tsunami in 2005, he was actively involved in the successful rescue of many affected people in Sri Lanka. He carried out extensive inter island patrolling towards anti-poaching Ops and rescued the crew of a damaged ship south of Car Nicobar in 2006. He was also actively involved in the Anti-Naxal ops in Andhra Pradesh 2004 and was instrumental in fire fighting operations of a forest fire near Vishakhapattanam on 09 Oct 2014. From 2012 to 2013 he has been actively involved in raising a new Mi-17 VS unit. As a flying supervisor, he has been instrumental in achieving the training of aircrew and ensuring accident/incident free operations in the unit. He has been at the helm of all operations carried out by the unit in its area of responsibility. His unflinching devotion to duty and willingness to keep service interest paramount even at the cost of personal time bears testimony to his exceptional leadership qualities. The Officer has successfully executed the pioneering underslung ops of field guns in hilly terrain. For exceptional devotion to duty, Hon'ble President is pleased to award Vayu Sena Medal (Devotion to duty) to Wing Commander Devam Vats. |
