|Details :|| On August 31, 2008, the Air Force received an emergency call from the state government that embankments of one of the tributaries of Brahmaputra river had breached due to heavy rains, causing flash floods in and around Rangia town, about 50 kilometres from Guwahati. A number of people were caught unawares and there was imminent danger to their lives.
The IAF scrambled a Mi-17 helicopter under the command of Wg Cdr Rajan Puri from its Guwahati base. A quick aerial recce was carried out and the most sensitive areas were identified. At one of the places, a family, including children, was marooned atop a broken rooftop and with the rapidly rising water level, the structure was in danger of being washed away.
Realising the gravity of the situation, Wg Cdr Puri quickly brought his helicopter to hover over the spot and prepared for live winching. Since there were children among the marooned people, the gunner of the helicopter, JWO Thapliyal was winched down to the rooftop to assist them. Under adverse weather conditions of low clouds and high wind speeds over raging waters, the helicopter evacuated the people, with the gunner, the last to be winched up, making it with just minutes to spare.
Thapliyal, who was knee-deep in the gushing waters atop the structure by the time he was winched up, was also decorated with the Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry.
