Details : Group Captain PVN Ravi Madhav Sarma (20616) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in Logistics branch on 15 Dec 90. During these 24 years of service, he has held varied appointments including Director Maintenance Inspection (Logistics), Chief Logistics Officer of a Repair Depot and an Equipment depot and instructional tenures at Airmen Training Institute, National Defence Academy and Air Force Administrative College. During the recent Humanitarian and Disaster Relief operations in the state of J & K, 31 MCU was tasked to coordinate airlift of relief material and rescue teams within short notice from AF Stn Palam. As the Commanding Officer of 31 MCU, the officer was responsible for airlift of all relief material out of the NCR area. He dedicatedly worked towards this mission with his team maximising utilisation of the available resources with impeccable planning. These operations were carried out relentlessly from 07 Sep to 22 Sep 14 round the clock enabling the IAF to airlift 1210 tons of relief material in 107 transport aircraft within a span of 16 days. The officer also organised separate teams for extending reception to more than 6500 rescued passengers from J & K during the same period. He personally interacted with officials of NOMA and various Ministries, officials of the Resident Commission of J & K, local suppliers of relief materials, Red Cross, IRCTC, NAFED, Tihar Jail officials, Mother Dairy and some NGOs to plan and coordinate the airlift of loads to meet the task assigned by the IAF His professional acumen and experience were put to test with regard to packing, palletising and loading the cargo in various aircraft including the recently acquired C-17/C-130 aircraft resulting in nil damages to the cargo at the destination. The task undertaken by the Unit under the leadership of the officer in such a short span while simultaneously carrying out other service commitments amounting to a three month average workload of the Unit which is rare but a landmark achievement for any MCU. The distinguished act of the officer towards the above task is of special significance to the IAF as it had helped IAF fulfill its commitment towards the nation at this critical juncture. For distinguished service of high order, Hon'ble President is please to award Vishisht Seva Medal to Group Captain PVN Ravi Madhav Sarma.
