Details : Wing Commander Amit Verma (20480) Flying (Pilot) was commissioned in the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot in the flying branch on 16 Dec 1989. He has served in MiG-21 squadrons and has over 3000 hours of flying to his credit. He is a Type Qualified Flying Instructor who has earlier held the appointment of Fit Cdr in Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) and is presently commanding MOFTU 'B' Sqn, On 13 Feb 2002, while captaining an instructional sortie on a MiG- 21 T-69B ac, he carried out an exemplary landing on the nose wheel with absolutely minimal damage, after its main under carriage had failed to lock down. In 2005 he was instrumental in activation of Lengpui and Imphal airfields by MiG-21 ac and for the planning and execution of Exercise Abhyas of Eastern Air Command (EAC). He has successfully undergone the 27th Air Staff Course in Bangladesh and has secured a DS rating. Upon his return he was initially tasked to function as the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of Air Force Station Bagdogra wherein working with exceptional zeal and motivation he ensured that Directorate of Air Staff Inspection (DASI) assessed operations of the base as Above Average. As a commanding officer he has maintained the highest personal standards of professionalism and conduct and has also motivated all ranks in the squadron to continually raise their level of performance. In 2007 the squadron successfully carried out operations from the international airport at Kolkata and with the Indian Navy in Goa. In 2008 under his command the squadron was selected as the best fighter squadron of EAC. All operational pilots of the squadron are qualified and current in all the envisaged roles and the pilots have repeatedly performed exceedingly well in the inspections by Aircrew Examining Board (AEB). Safety in maintenance practices of the squadron has prevented any accidents or incidents due to 'Human Error' in servicing and has also resulted in a high percentage of serviceability while flying the oldest fighter aircraft in the inventory of the lAF Wg Cdr Amit Verma has also displayed an exceptional degree of initiative, involvement and dedication in all spheres of activity in the station. He has specially been instrumental towards a total face lift of the play school at AF Stn Bagdogra, bringing it at par with the very best. For his exceptional devotion to duty, Hon'ble President is pleased to award 'Vayu Sena Medal' to Wing Commander Amit Verma.
