Media Reviews

indexplogo.gif (3603 bytes)"The account by Mohan and Chopra, replete with interviews with pilots and veterans, squadron diaries and unpublished photographs, not only demolishes myths and counterclaims on both sides but makes one of the most critical points of all — that the 1965 operations inestimably helped prepare the IAF for a war which was to be upon it just six years later, and possibly put in perspective for the government, the immediate need for a progressive and structured modernization programme, one that would leave the ground in the late 1970s.

The account does both nations service by unmasking insightful official accounts of the war ”

Book Review by Air Commodore Jasjit Singh VrC

TBR-Jun06.jpg (58968 bytes)"This is one of the rare and unique books on air war in 1965 between Pakistan and India reconstructing history from personal accounts, diaries and interviews. ......An excellent attempt by two academics makes this book unique, especially when seen in the context of the pathetic official history written by a huge team under the Indian Ministry of Defence."

AviationHistory.jpg (4541 bytes)"This is an unusually well-done book on a subject that has been almost completely overlooked in the American press. The authors have interviewed many of the participants, and in doing so have greatly enlivened their story with personal accounts. This book is highly recommended, especially for the aviation history collector who thought he had everything."

  • Vayu Aerospace & Defence Review, V/2005
Chalees Saal Baad by Group Captain J C Malik (Retd)

Vayu01.jpg (130031 bytes)"This monumental book has come like a gust of fresh air, like balm to soothe any wounded psyche and restore to our air arm the pride and confidence of being the protector  of the nation.... The authors have created an appropriate example of hard work and sincerity.. The narration cannot be encapsulated in this review, as it is like the Ganges River in flood, it cannot be captured in this little bucket...."

Telegraph-Logo.gif (5520 bytes)"Most of the books written by retired military officials and civilian analysts deal with India-Pakistan ground war. The volume under review is the only one of its kind and opens up a new dimension in military history-writing."

  • Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies
Revisiting 1965 by Air Marshal Vinod Patney (Retd) SYSM PVSM AVSM VrC

IPCSLogo.jpg (9373 bytes)"The authors have rendered yeoman service. The book makes no pretensions to being a reference book but it is worthy of appreciation. One small criticism that can be made is that the writings should have been accompanied by maps of relevant areas. Nevertheless, the book will evoke fond nostalgia amongst those that participated in the war; it represents needed knowledge for the professional practitioners of air power; and for the lay reader it is an interesting description of an air war that took place 40 years ago. One can only hope that the authors will soon publish their account of the air actions during the 1971 war and the Kargil conflict."

"The authors have made a generous attempt to correspond and interact with PAF pilots to verify. I one case the PAF pilot has himself mailed the gun camera pictures. I haven’t seen the PAF complaining nor the hyperactive Pakistani propaganda machine..... The India-Pakistan 1965 Air War is a must read.  "
