Wartime Gallantry Awards for the Indian Air Force
| Prior to Independence all Indian
Air Force personnel were eligible to recieve the British Empires decorations for service
and gallantry in World War 2. The fledgling Indian Air Force thus recieved, One DSO ,24
DFCs and 2 AFCs for its part in helping the allied war effort against the Axis powers. When India became a republic, India constituted its own Gallantry Award for bravery in Combat. Foremost was the Param Vir Chakra, followed in precedence by the Maha Vir Chakra and the Vir Chakra. The following is the Tabular format of the awards received by the IAF . It does not include awards like the VM or the VSM which were given in recognition of services during War Time. The Indian Army gives the SM, the equivalent of the VM for acts of bravery, wherever it seems the award of the Vr C is not justifiable. The Air force too, would have in all respects would have followed this policy. Our regrets that these details are not included in the scope of these pages. Please follow the links below the table for the lists of awards recipients.
