Governor Malik resigns after MiGs take
out Goverment House in Dacca. |
Dec 14, Dhaka: The Governor of East Pakistan, Mr. A H Malik today resigned from his position and renounced all ties with the West Pakistani administration , to take refuge at the Red Cross Center in Dhaka. This sudden declaration just after his Office came under rocket attacks by MiG-21s of the Indian Air force.
The Governor was attending a high level officials meet at the Government House in Dacca when rockets from the Indian MiGs ripped open the massive roof of the building. The Governor and his staff who had by then taken refuge in a shelter seemed to have had enough. According to Eye-Witnesses, Governor Malik said a small prayer, then produced |
a small paper on which he wrote down his resignation with trembling hands. . It seems the rocket attack has proved to be the proverbial last straw on the camel's back. He had already been under pressure for the past few days with demands for Surrender from India and lack of support from West Pakistan. The credit for forcing the resignation of Governor Malik and his Cabinet would go without any doubt to the members of No.28, The First Supersonics. The MiGs that carried out the attack were from this squadron based in Guwahati. The raid was led by Wg Cdr Bishnoi, the CO. They had recieved inputs from the DCAS, Air Vice Marshal Idris Latif on the impending high level meeting to be held in Dacca. The venue was initially given as Circuit House. The Pilots had nothing more than a tourist map to navigate to thier intended Target. As the mission was about to take off, further intelligence was recieved regarding the change of venue to Government house. Not just the building but also on which part of the building to strike. Wg Cdr Bishnoi led the formation consisting of Flt Lt Vinod Bhatia, Flt Lt |
No wonder the Governor of East Pakistan got completely shaken and unnerved. with his resignation, the sole decision making authority is the Military commander, Lt Gen A A K Niazi. With Indian troops on the outskirts of Dacca, it is left to be seen as to what his options are. |
