Firepower Demo
The T-55 at the firepower demo at the army's firing range in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra on 02 January 2006. Note the dummy fume extractor on the gun. The dummies were first used in the 1971 Indo-Pak War to help differentiate Indian Army T-54 tanks (a previous model) in the field from similar Pakistan Army Type 59 tanks, of Chinese origin. Most other tanks in Indian service have in-built fume extractors on their guns. An upgrade program for the T-55, known as Project Gulmohar, was almost complete as of October 1999. The tanks were expected to remain in service till 2015. However in 2001, the Indian Army decided to phase out the tank over a period of seven years and replace them with upgraded T-72M1s.
