On 16 December 2001, HAL delivered two Lancers, indigenous variant of the HAL Cheetah, to the Army for user trials. One will be tested in the cold in Kashmir and the other will be tested in the summer heat in Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan. The then-incumbent Defence Minister - George Fernandes - informed Indian Parliament on 14 March 2002, that three HAL Lancers have been delivered to the Army for counter insurgency, riot handling, security and reconnaissance roles.
