Indian Ground Troops have destroyed Thirteen Chafee Tanks and Five Artillery guns. Sources have indicated that we have lost Six of our own   PT-76 Tanks.

In two days of fighting atleast Forty of our soldiers have been killed in the heavy fighting. The toll would have been much higher if not for the heroic effort of a Tank squadron in the area. Maj Daljit Singh Narang of 45th Cavalry made the supreme sacrifice countering the attack by enemy troops. Narang.jpg (19136 bytes)

Maj Daljit Singh Narang (Left) died a heroes death in yesterday's battle

Giving details of this operation, Maj Gen Dalbir Singh , GOC 9 Division had told TLT that on the morning of November 21st, 14 enemy tanks supported by two inf. btns. attacked Maj Narang's position.

A fierce tank battle was fought at very close quarters, for nearly 30 minutes. C Squadron effectively engaged and destroyed 10 enemy tanks. Subsequently, 4 more enemy tanks were knocked out. C Squadron lost three tanks in this encounter.  Major Narang standing on the turret of his tank, skillfully and boldly maneuvered his squadron during this battle, despite heavy enemy fire.

The Indian troops, inspired by his courage, inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy. While leading his men in the thick of battle, he was hit by enemy MMG fire and was killed. It is said that "there are a few parallels in the history of armoured warfare where one armoured squadron was engaged & annihilated by an armoured force of equal strength at such little cost in terms of tank and personnel casualties."

The Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers have recovered six of the enemy tanks. One of the tanks could be seen by the Journalists near the battle field.
